Mr. Mehl by Steve DelCastillo

To Mr. Mehl: Junior year had to have been my worst year in high school. I did not enjoy it one bit besides having Sociology period 3-4 for half the year. I was not having the best time during school but, Mr. Mehl made my class feel more a break from an average classroom setting to a group setting with that truly encourages students to share their opinions regardless of what they were (as long as they weren’t attacking anyone individually). Throughout the course Mr. Mehl challenged us to think of other people and their situations even if it might be hard and encourage us to take pride in what we do and where we go. I by no means like coming to school every day but Mr Mehl helped me look at it in a different light. He said “be happy that you do get to see your friends here, that you get to see your family and be a kid while you can”. He also opened my eyes to the issues of the world we live in (being exposed to all this information that the rest of world isn’t like Freehold, New Jersey). Some people have to worry about being shot or killed on their way to school or that bombs are going off at their places of education, or that some people are still being discriminated for petty differences that isn’t a big deal here. Even more important and alarming, he made me realize that some of the major problems that I thought didn’t exist or only existed in faraway places were actually happening much closer to home. Some of these horrible acts happen in NJ and our bordering states. That gave me more of a drive to volunteer and gave me more of a reason for enlisting in the military. Mr Mehl helped wake me up to some issues in the world and now I am going to help be the change. Now, being in his class senior year brought to me to have fun and be have a sense of humor. Sometimes if I am having a bad day I know i can look forward to period 10 because Mr. Mehl will have some awesome story to tell us or some amazing event that happened. All year long Mr. Mehl goes out of his way to get our feedback on what we want to do, what we want to learn and how we learn.

Mr. Mehl made my high school experience a whole lot more relaxing and easy. I’d like to say thank you, Mr. Mehl, for your awesomeness
