Ciara Roche is Bringing Her Talents to Cornell

Athlete Name: Ciara Roche

College: Cornell University

Sport: Cross Country/Track and Field

Why did you choose to go to this college?

I first considered Cornell because it had the specific major I was looking for: Human Biology. I visited the campus and thought it and the town of Ithaca were beautiful. I spoke to the coach and I believe he will be able to help me be as successful as I can on and off the track. The team is strong and deep, and I got along with them on my official visit. (And of course, I look great in red @Briggs)

Why do you think you’ve been so successful?

I’ve had the support of my family and caring coaches all throughout my career. They always push me and encourage me to do my best, and help and keep me optimistic when I am injured.

What are the biggest highlights of your running career at FTHS?

  • 5-time Monmouth County Champion
  • 4-time Shore Conference Champion
  • 6-time Central Jersey Group 4 Sectional Champion
  • 2-time Group 4 Champion
  • 4-time State Relay Champion
  • 3- Relay All-American Honors
  • Being the 2014 National 4×800 Champions
  • 5-time First Team All-Shore
  • All-Shore Athlete of the Year
  • 3-time Shore Coaches Track Association’s Athlete of the Year
  • School Records in 5000m, 3200m, 1600m, 4×800, and DMR

What will you miss most about running at FTHS?

I will miss my team and the coaches.  We all got so close over the last four years.  I will miss how our whole county is like a family, and I know many of the coaches and athletes from other schools.  I also will miss how everything is in New Jersey, and not a plane ride away.

Who has had the biggest influence on your running career?

Coach Briggs has had the biggest influence on my running career. He was always patient with me when I was new to the sport and learning about everything. As I became more experienced, he gave the attention I needed in order to become one of the best runners in the state. He has never given up on me, and he always puts 110% of his dedication into all his athletes.

What advice would you give to younger teammate who are just starting out?

Be patient. In this sport there are ups and downs. There are good days and bad days, and sometimes good seasons and bad seasons. Don’t let it stress you out; have fun while you’re here because it goes by quickly. Don’t waste time complaining. Just enjoy the simplicity of things while you can.

Coach Briggs on Ciara Roche and her commitment to Cornell:

“Cornell is a perfect fit for Ciara’s ambitious goals in the classroom and on the track. To be an Ivy League student-athlete is on of the hardest things to attempt to be in college. I have no doubt she will reach her athletic goals while maintaining a high level of academic standing.”
