Song of the Week: Roman Holiday by Halsey

Melissa Ng, Columnist

She is the epitome, the physical being of hipster Tumblr blogs and cliché Twitter poems. She tells stories of adventurous, wild young love, and relationships filled with sex, passion, heartbreak and sadness. Halsey– a unique up-and-coming artist– has attracted major popularity within the last few months.

Halsey was born in New Jersey (woo!) and at age 17, she began her career as a singer and songwriter. She released her first debut E.P., Room 93, in 2014 and then her studio album, Badlands, in August of 2015.  She is now being recognized in the song “The Feeling” on Justin Bieber’s new album, Purpose. She used the term “tri-bi” to identify herself, “biracial, bisexual and bipolar.” Some songs on her album are influenced by her relationship with The 1975’s lead singer, Matty Healy.

“Roman Holiday” by Halsey is a cool transcendental music experience. She confesses the “oh wells” and “what if’s” of a past relationship, and according to the lyrics she is “miles away” and only has memories to survive on. A “Roman holiday” is actually “an occasion on which enjoyment or profit is derived from others’ suffering or discomfort,” which means pain is necessary in order to feel pleasure. It is clear the relationship was so lovely, but so toxic and in the end was lost.
