Song of the Week: How to Be a Heartbreaker by Marina and the Diamonds

Melissa Ng, Columnist

The art of heartbreak is a process many have unfortunately undergone or might someday commit. Heartbreak is not fun or easy; and breaking someone else’s heart is usually done without intention or out of carelessness.

How to Be a Heartbreaker by Marina and the Diamonds clearly breaks down each step on the path to being a heartbreaker and defines the reasons behind each motive. Marina portrays the actions into an upbeat, fun pop song. You learn the lesson that sometimes you have to break others’ hearts in order to protect your own. She files under the indie pop category, but her second album Electra Heart incorporated many ‘eletctropop’ elements.

I saw her live last week (Monday, November 9th) in Manhattan and let me tell you that it was the greatest and most stressful concert I’ve ever been to. Getting on the bus to Manhattan the second school ends, sitting in traffic and trying to figure out the subways all within the three hour time frame between school and the time the doors of the venue opened drained me physically and mentally. Yet that energy was restored when Marina came on stage. She split the show into three parts, which were each era of her three albums. It showed the progression and maturity of her music and image.

Spoiler alert: Rule #1 is that you gotta have fun.
