Bombing of Tehran & Killing of Ayatollah
Background:
Starting in 1978, an uprising against the government of Iran—the Shah. The Shah was an autocrat who while ruling Iran started to westernize the country which the citizens were not a fan of. The revolution ended in 1979 with the overthrow of the Shah and the installment of the Islamic Republic—led by Ayatollah Khomeini. The Islamic Republic was a government following Sharia law in the Shia sect of Islam. After Khomeini was crowned the Supreme Leader a group of extreme conservative-valued people began to run the country. Women lost many rights; other people in the country lost their rights to free speech and freedoms of expression. 46 years later in late 2025 a rapid decline of the Iranian Rial, the currency of Iran, caused massive protests throughout the country. The fuel of the human rights abuses from the Islamic Republic to the Iranians caused these protests to last for months. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which is a special operations branch of the Iranian military, began to kill assemblers against the government led by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. To conceal the fact that the government was killing protesters, Iran cut all internet access within its borders so word could not spread. Many reports find that around 37.000 protesters were killed by the IRGC in just slightly over 2 months of demonstrations.
Iranian Nuclear Program:
Many reports also indicate that Iran was in the process of building nukes. The first blow to Iran’s nuclear program by the Trump administration occurred in June 2025 which was named Operation Midnight Hammer—this attack was to 3 Iranian nuclear bases which severely weakened their ability to create nuclear bombs. In other diplomatic talks between the U.S. and the Islamic Republic, they have made it clear that they will not cease their plans to develop a nuclear bomb.

Due to Iran’s failure to disband their nuclear program a joint military operation between the United States and Israel bombed many military facilities around Iran. A strike also hit the residence of their Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in which he was killed. Many other high ranking members of the Iranian government and military were either killed or injured in strikes as well. There an all girls elementary school was hit by a strike but it is not clear who is responsible at this time; reports indicate around 100-150 deaths. Iran launched many counter attacks. One of these attacks was to the civilian-only Dubai Airport in the United Arab Emirates. Many Israeli and American military bases were also bombed in other parts of the Middle East in retaliation by Iran. A Kuwaiti air defense system also accidentally shot down an American fighter jet
What is going on right now:
As of right now there is continued fighting back-and-forth striking between the allied
forces of the United States, Israel, and other gulf states like the United Arab Emirates with Iran. An important strike was the targeting of the U.S. embassy in Riyadh—a direct attack of Iran onto American soil. In addition, Hezbollah, which is an Iranian terror-proxy, has launched many strikes at Israel. In response, Israel has fired back into the capital of Lebanon, Beirut, which contains Hezbollah soldiers and operating bases. President Trump also has warned of an increase in the intensity of the strikes on Iran. In preparation for a stronger attack from Iran in the Middle East, the United States is beginning to close many of its embassies in the region.
