The ability to move or manipulate objects with one’s mind. It sounds pretty simple if you barely glance over it. Picture yourself on the couch, thirsty, and realizing your drink is on a faraway table. You could get up and go grab it yourself, but then you remember your superpower: telekinesis. You retrieve your drink without even lifting a finger, the glass hovering over and into your hand. Or, picture yourself as you fathom the fact that you could build and disassemble a human being from the very inside out, invading their mind and body in a way so cruelly intimate, with everything that makes their body up as a whole at the mercy of your psyche. And all without even lifting a finger…
Telekinesis can either be a mundane power or an absolutely terrifying one. It truly depends on how creative one chooses to get with it. I figured this out while drafting an antagonist for a book I’m currently writing. At first, I thought telekinesis was too boring for an antagonist who was supposed to be truly ruthless and merciless. However, I also knew I wanted to take the basic superpower trope and shine light on the true potential each superpower could possess. Hence, I thought about what telekinesis could encompass. My mind turned to anatomy, the very makeup of the human body itself. If one possessed telekinesis and a truly intimate knowledge of human anatomy, they theoretically could peer into the human body itself with their mind, their victim at the mercy of any and every possibility.
The human body itself is already such a complex organism, and it is this elaborate makeup of the human body that makes telekinesis so terrifying. It opens the door to such a vast amount of possibilities, whether for better or worse. Induced hallucinations, manipulation of motor functions, emotions, hormones, and physiology, pain amplification or suppression, memory editing, autonomic system control, and real-time behavior control are all feasible in this context. If telekinesis can touch neurons, it can control thoughts, perception, and memory. If it could touch hormones, it could control emotions, stress, and metabolism. Motor function gives the telekinetic full control over any and all movement. And autonomic systems? The control of life and death. Telekinesis is no longer a force in this scenario; it is a complete override of human biology.
Now, it is vital to acknowledge that there is a positive side to such a power. A telenetic with such capability could make a phenomenal doctor and truly save or assist the lives of so many patients. One could perform internal procedures without incisions, remove tumors cell by cell, repair blood vessels without opening the body, and stop internal bleeding almost instantly. Focused ultrasounds and MRI-guided interventions would have limitless extension. One could stabilize a patient with immediate trauma response; clamping blood vessels remotely, restarting or regulating heart rhythm, modulating autonomic responses, and aligning fractures before swelling sets in. Pain management without drugs; one could modulate pain pathways in the spinal cord, prevent chronic pain from forming after injury, and offer precise, immediate relief without addiction risks. Hormonal and metabolic regulation; by influencing endocrine glands, one could stabilize blood sugar in diabetics, prevent adrenal crisis, regulate thyroid function, and balance reproductive hormones. A telekinetic with microscopic precision could direct immune cells to infection sites, suppress autoimmune attacks, accelerate wound healing, and remove plagues or clots before they cause damage. For example, immunotherapy trains the immune system to target cancer, and nanomedicine aims to manipulate cells directly. Lastly, by gently modulating neural circuits, a telekinetic could reduce anxiety by calming the amygdala, lift depression by stimulating reward paths, interrupt intrusive thoughts, and restore healthy sleep rhythms.
Telekinesis is level in its potential for destruction and healing. In every way that telekinesis can disassemble a human being, it can also heal and repair a human being. It’s fascinating to think about because it is so balanced. As I stated before, it depends on how creative one chooses to be with it. If a telekinetic ever did come into existence, it is up to them as an individual to pick a side: one of dismantling or one of building. Which leaves me to wrap up this article with a question to you, the reader. If you wake up tomorrow morning and you discover that you suddenly have telekinesis, what possibilities would you pursue?
