Hello, everyone! Today, I’m going to be reviewing the new dark romantic comedy, The Drama. Let’s review!
So, The Drama stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. It follows the story of a happily engaged couple who plan to get married very soon. But then, they play a game of “What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done?” Zendaya’s character reveals an incredibly dark secret that sends everything off the rails, and Robert Pattinson reconsiders his decision to marry her. This movie was initially not on my radar until a week or two ago, and when I heard it was good, that intrigued me. So I saw it, and let me warn you… this is NOT A ROMCOM!
The Drama is the most uncomfortable and disturbing movie of the year, and I mean that in the best way possible. I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I thought I was going to. I thought it was going to be a “Play That Goes Wrong” type romcom, and yes, I’m comparing this to a straight play. Instead, it took a much darker tone, and I really liked that about this movie. I was incredibly shocked once the tables turned. It worked amazingly.
The discomfort was driven by the performances by everyone in this movie. I especially have to give my compliments to three people: Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Alana Haim. Zendaya does a really good job here. Pattinson has the ability to physically make me cringe, and that ability is unmatched. Alana Haim does such a great job here because I absolutely hated her character, although her character does remind me of a lot of people today. You know who you are.
The film very much succeeds at blending humor with the story. Sometimes you’re genuinely laughing, and sometimes the humor is so dark, you don’t even know whether to laugh or not. I saw this movie with my best friend, and he didn’t like the editing, but I personally did like the editing alongside the direction. Its use of flashbacks and dream-like sequences to blur out reality elevates it above other genres.
The movie is not stagnant at any moment. Constantly, there are moments driven by decisions from characters that will make you gasp and shiver. Overall, The Drama is a very uncomfortable and painful experience of a film, and I mean that in a great manner. It’s a hard one to recommend, but if this review piques your interest or liking, it’s totally worth a watch.
I’m going to give The Drama a B+
