Panic- The Smiths

I first heard this song while watching the show “Black Mirror”, and I immediately became enamoured with the catchy tune. The Smiths are a popular British rock band known for their hit songs such as “How Soon Is Now?” and “This Charming Man”. In their song “Panic”, the band sings of tragedy in their hometown of London. You should listen to this song if you like catchy tunes, or rock music.

Breezeblocks- Alt-J

“Breezeblocks” was one of Alt-J’s first big hits. In the song, lead singer Joe Newman sings of a relationship with a girl who wants to leave. But, the character represented in the tune refuses to let her leave. A breeze block, or a cinder block, is used to metaphorically “keep her down” and make her stay in the relationship. Additionally the music video, which shows the story of the quarrelling lovers, is entirely in reverse. You should listen to this song if you like alternative music, or songs with dark lyrics.

Days of Lavender- Promises Ltd.

Promises Ltd. is a collaboration between Charlie Brand from the band Miniature Tigers, and Chrome Sparks (Jeremy Malvin). With Charlie Brand’s vocals and Chrome Sparks’ instrumentals, the songs created by Promises Ltd. are nothing short of incredible. Brand writes and sings gorgeous lyrics of love and longing, such as, “Mournful solitude in tears I cry. in vain I search for holy truths that bloom in your eyes,” and Chrome Sparks provides a great synth beat to accompany him. You should listen to this song if you like well written lyrics, or synth-pop songs.

Cariño- The Marías

“Cariño” means honey in spanish, and The Marías are able to live up to that title by creating a song that’s as sweet as honey. The majority of the tune is sung in spanish, but a few lines are sung in english. The song has a unique blend of languages and a fun dream pop beat accompanying the lovely vocals. Additionally, the lyrics tell a sweet love story. You should listen to this song if you like pop songs, or love songs.

Let It Pass- Jacob Ogawa

In this indie pop song, Jacob Ogawa sings a heartwarming song of love and loss. He tells the story of lost love, singing, “Think I’ll let it pass away, so in love with yesterday”. His smooth vocals along with the drums combine to create a lovely song. You should listen to this tune if you like sad music or love songs.
