“White Teeth Teens” – Lorde

You may know Lorde from her hit songs “Green Light” or “Royals”. But let me introduce you to one of her greater, lesser known songs. In this more upbeat pop song, Lorde talks about “white teeth teens”, or the more popular kids. She claims that she “tried to join [them], but never did”. This song talks about being yourself above all else, and that you can be successful if you stay true to yourself. You should listen to this song if you like songs with a good message, or if you like more buoyant pop songs!

“Oh no” – Marina and the Diamonds

In this hit song, Marina tells the story of a woman who only wants success. From this, she has lost almost everything in life. She defends having no friends or meaningful relationships by saying, “I know exactly what I want and who I want to be…I’m now becoming my own self-fulfilled prophecy”. After a few verses, Marina then claims that, “Maybe it is all a test, cause I feel like I’m the worst, so I always act like I’m the best.” You should listen to this song if you like cheerful pop songs with darker lyrics.

“OBLIVIOUS” – The Strokes

This bold, indie rock jam by the Strokes is a fun and different song for the band. Lead singer Julian Casablancas sings about how we as people are “oblivious” to many events in life through a series of metaphors and a catchy chorus. You should listen to this song if you like indie rock, or if you like lyrics that make you think!

“Orpheus Under the Influence” – The Buttertones

In this upbeat and ominous song, The Buttertones tell a unique story through song. The lyrics tell the tale of the Greek myth involving a musician named Orpheus. In the tale, Orpheus was able to charm living creatures with his music. His wife was kidnapped and taken to the underworld, where Orpheus tried to rescue her. This attempt proved unsuccessful, as Orpheus died. Lead singer Richard Araiza manages to tell this story in a catchy and modern way, all through one great song. You should listen to this song if you like catchy songs, or lyrics that tell a story!

“Just a Stranger” – Kali Uchis, Steve Lacy

In this hit song led by breakout artist Kali Uchis, Uchis tells the story of a girl who only loves a man for his money. Steve Lacy sings from the man’s point of view, and he doesn’t care that his girlfriend is just using him. This catchy song helped to launch Kali’s career further, and it helped to introduce Steve Lacy to a wider audience. You should listen to this song if you like pop music with an influence of rap, or music with an overall catchy tune!
