I constantly find myself amazed by my “Discover Weekly” playlist made every Monday morning as I find myself in love with every song that I hear from it. I asked around and dug into the app to realize Spotify has a whole “recommended for you” section which nails each individual person’s music taste right on the head. So how does Spotify manage to pick out songs that match your exact music preferences out of the millions of songs in existence?

Spotify starts by analyzing the playlists you have saved or created from scratch. It finds two or more songs that have the same pattern, and finds a new song that follows that same style. This is done by locating users that listen to the same songs, and finding the playlists they create around those specific songs. So basically, Spotify finds users with the same music taste and pulls songs that they’ve picked out for themselves and adds it to your own collection. In addition, Spotify creates your own personal “taste profile,” categorizing down to a very specific subgenre.

Spotify keeps track of songs you’ve listened to repetitively, if you’ve clicked on an artist’s page, or if you’ve added a song from your “Discover Weekly” into your own collection. By using this data, Spotify is able to differentiate between what kind of music you really enjoy and the ones you do not. In order to get the best weekly playlist, make sure you always add your favorite music into your library!

The company also tries to bring a sense of comfort into the “Discover Weekly” playlist by making the constant number in a playlist 30 songs since it’s an explorable amount without being overwhelming, but still personal and intimate. In addition, Spotify always throws in one or two songs by an artist you’ve previously listened to so that you feel a sense of trust and familiarity.

Spotify’s “Discover Weekly” doesn’t only make it easier for listeners to find music they enjoy, but it helps undiscovered artists gain popularity. In fact, more than 8,000 artists on Spotify said half of their listeners found them through these playlists. The “Discover Weekly” playlist was introduced in July of 2015 and has gained much popularity since due to the genius personal touch behind it. Use it to your advantage and you’re guaranteed to find the best music out there!
