The Hoop Scoop: Rajon Rondo and His Triple-Doubles

Chris Goodman, Columnist

rajon rondo picRajon Rondo has been on a tear as of late. The Kings point guard has had four triple doubles in his past seven games. This is intriguing because no one knew how he would respond to his disappointing 2014-15 season, and his off-season trade. Now it is clear that he still is a great player and will continue to be a triple-double machine like he once was in his days playing for the Boston Celtics. He has the potential to stuff the stat sheet every game, but what will stop him from getting a triple double every game?

Assists will certainly not be the Achilles heel for the Kings point guard. Rondo was always an above average passer, and he will continue to get double-digit assists night in and night out because of Demarcus Cousins. Rondo now has a legitimate All-Star player in Cousins to play alongside with, which in turn will increase his assists.

Scoring will also not be the problem for Rondo. Even though he was never really an above average scorer or jump shooter, his ability to weave through the defense and use his ball fakes to get to the rim help him to get high-percentage shots. Because of this he will most likely be able to put up at least 10 points every game.

Rebounds will be the weakness that is keeping him from getting a triple-double every night. At 6’1 he cannot out jump or out reach the big men, which means most of his rebounds will be off of long misses. This means that on nights when a team is shooting well, Rondo won’t get many rebound opportunities.

Of course no one is expecting Rajon Rondo to get a triple-double every night, but he has the ability to. He is an exceptional all-around player and there will be many stat sheet stuffing performances from him this year and it will be very fun to watch.
