The MLB season started two weeks ago, and there have already been many storylines. Underperformers, injuries, surprises, and early standouts have all been evident this year so far. So, let’s hop right into it.
General Standings
The Los Angeles Dodgers (shocker), New York Yankees, and Milwaukee Brewers all stand at the top of the standings two weeks in. Two surprise teams this season are the Pirates and Marlins, who both sit multiple games above .500 despite missing the playoffs last year.
Four of the six AL teams that made the playoffs last year sit below .500. The Red Sox, Tigers, Mariners, and Blue Jays all are towards the bottom of the standings.
Now, given it is extremely early, teams can come around as late as August to make the playoffs. So don’t give up hope yet for some of these teams. Some teams to watch for this year will obviously be the Dodgers, the Marlins, and the Pirates, who are on the cusp of the playoffs, and the Yankees, who are once again looking to win #28.
Player Performances
A few surprise performances are from Andy Pages (LAD), Xavier Edwards (MIA), and Jordan Walker (STL). A surprise pitcher is Bryce Elder of the Atlanta Braves, who has 13 innings of scoreless baseball with 13 strikeouts.
For this season, look out for Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge as the favorites to win MVP again.
Injuries
A few key injuries so far this season include superstar Juan Soto, who will miss multiple weeks with a calf injury; Cubs Pitcher Cade Horton, who will miss the whole season and will need Tommy John; Astros pitcher Hunter Brown will miss a few weeks with a shoulder strain; Toronto catcher Alejandro Kirk has had surgery on his thumb; and Baltimore pitcher Zach Eflin will need Tommy John Surgery.
