Hey guys! Today, I’ll be reviewing the new Pixar animated comedy, Hoppers. Let’s review!
So, Hoppers follows college girl Mabel (Piper Curda), who is a huge animal lover. She discovers an animal research group that develops technology, allowing human consciousness to hop into lifelike, robotic animals. She uses the technology and places her consciousness in a robotic beaver to uncover mysteries within the world of animals beyond her imagination. The trailer looked very solid, and the animation looked amazing. So, I went to see this and… this is probably Pixar’s wildest movie yet.
Hoppers is a very funny, heartfelt animated film that is a lot more willing than most kids’ movies to acknowledge the ugly truth of the circle of life in a comedic fashion. It comments on people’s inability to change before backpedaling into a satisfying enough ending centered on how everybody has to work together to help undo the damage that has been done to nature. The film establishes an emotional core as soon as it begins. It goes to truly wild places too. It’s a lot like an animated version of Avatar.
Piper Curda is great here and brings all the necessary energy to match the scenario she’s in. She also brings such earnest emotion to the character, ensuring that her desire to save the environment that everyone seems to ignore is compelling. Bobby Moynihan is the strongest supporting player here. He brings a steady kindness, which becomes his greatest strength. Dave and Eduardo Franco are in here, and they’re great too, especially coming from someone who loves Dave.
Director Daniel Chong brings a very energetic direction and vision to this movie, but he knows when to slow down with very impactful moments of serenity. The screenplay is very productive and handles exposition very well. The animation is very detailed and vibrant while successfully experimenting with more cartoonish character designs. The score is great because it’s just as lively as this movie. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Hoppers and found it to be very energetic and entertaining.
I’m gonna give Hoppers a B+.
