Greetings, everyone! Today, I’ll be reviewing the new Bride of Frankenstein reimagining, The Bride! Let’s review!
So, The Bride! takes place in 1930s Chicago. The story follows Frankenstein (Christian Bale), who asks Dr. Euphronius (Annette Bening) for a companion. They give life to a woman who was murdered, and she goes by The Bride (Jessie Buckley). That companionship then turns into romance, which in turn becomes a crime spree that sparks police interest and social change. The Bride! was one of my most anticipated movies of the year, and I have to say… what a performance.
I have not seen anything from Buckley before, and I have not seen Hamnet, for which she was nominated for Best Actress. This is the first movie I’ve seen her in, and Maggie Gyllenhaal also directs it. From what I’ve seen, she is a fantastic filmmaker. Jessie Buckley is absolutely phenomenal in this and gives one of the best performances of the year. Everybody seems to be divided on this movie, but for me, I loved this film!
Christian Bale gives an excellent performance as Frankenstein, as expected. This version of The Bride! is more of a Bonnie and Clyde-like reimagining. Jake Gyllenhaal plays an actor Frank has strong admiration for. Peter Sarsgaard and Penélope Cruz play detectives who are trying to catch both of them. All of the performances are great.
The production design is very good. The costume design is also great. My only nitpick with the film is some of the cinematography at times. Sometimes it is way too dark to the point where you cannot see their faces in some shots. But that is just a minor drawback, because the acting and writing make up for it alongside the soundtrack and directing.
Overall, The Bride! is very good and entertaining, and I highly recommend it. I’m going to give The Bride! an A.
