Hey guys! Today, I’ll be reviewing the new Glen Powell dark comedy titled How to Make a Killing. Let’s review!
So, How to Make a Killing follows Beckett Redfellow (Powell). When he was born, his mother was disowned by her extremely wealthy family. So this blue-collar guy will stop at nothing to reclaim his $28 billion inheritance, but seven relatives stand in the way. His goal is to take out all seven to claim what’s his. I thought the trailer was pretty decent, so I saw the movie, and honestly, after some thinking… I had a lot of fun with it!
This movie doesn’t break any new ground or set any new standards. However, it is a decently acted, enjoyable reverse murder mystery. This is one of those “We know who did it, but how are we gonna catch him?” type of whodunits. It feels like a classic revenge story, with the main character wanting to get back at the people who wronged him, and it includes some really solid twists. For me, these movies are always fun because you get to watch the main character beat the villains for what they did to him.
Glen Powell is great here as the leading man and continues to bring his charm, making you root for him. I still remember when he starred in Top Gun: Maverick as Hangman. Margaret Qualley and Jessica Henwick are also solid, and they have entirely different dynamics with Powell’s character, which is fun to watch. It has a very strong supporting cast as well, and they’re great at making you hate their guts. The movie does a good job of building tension as he takes out the family one by one, alongside fun action and a reasonable pace.
A big issue for me is that I never fully bought into the idea that Margaret Qualley’s character and Glen Powell’s character were childhood friends, especially with her stuck-up attitude, which is clearly intentional on the director’s part. But the ending was very satisfying. Overall, I enjoyed How to Make a Killing a lot more than I thought I would. I’d say if you have nothing to do, this is a good way to spend your time.
I’m going to give How to Make a Killing a B+.
