What’s up, guys?! Today, I’ll be reviewing the new animated movie from 4x NBA champion Stephen Curry, GOAT. Let’s review!
So, GOAT follows the story of Will Harris (Caleb McLaughlin), a little goat with big hoop dreams. He gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go pro and play the game of roarball, a high stakes, co-ed, super full-contact sport that is dominated by the swiftest and fiercest animals in the world. When I saw the trailer for this, I was curious if it would be good or terrible, and after seeing it, I have to say… It was flawed, but I liked it and found it very enjoyable!
To start, the animation is fantastic. Some people have said the animation here was better than Spider-Verse. I personally disagree, but it’s still astonishingly animated. The characters are also quite likable, and the movie was genuinely funny at times. Some jokes just made other children in the theater laugh, but there were some moments where I couldn’t stop laughing. The writing was a pleasant surprise.
The basketball sequences are also very entertaining and intriguing to watch. I really enjoyed the matches that could be seen in detail, but I kind of feel that this could work against it a wee bit. There are a few fights in this film that can be seen in detail, and more seem to be needed. Something I also liked at first, but that then deteriorated, is how dynamic the pacing is. It was a little too much, in my opinion.
The film jumps from one thing to another pretty effectively. They start a scene, finish it, and move along, but they start to overuse editing just to speed things up, leaving out scenes that could be interesting to viewers and resolving interpersonal conflicts in seconds. I feel that because of that, the movie could’ve benefited from another 10 minutes or so. Overall, GOAT is very fun and entertaining, but it leaves out things that would’ve been welcome.
I’m gonna give GOAT a B.
