Welcome, everyone! Today, I shall review the new Jason Statham action movie, Shelter. Let’s go!
Shelter follows the story of Michael Mason (Jason Statham), a recluse on a Scottish island who rescues a girl from the sea, which begins to unleash a series of events that culminate in an attack on his home and force Mason to confront his conflicted history. I love Statham and the action movies we get from him every year. The trailer for this one didn’t look much different from most of his films, except for the fact that he rescues a girl from the sea instead of from kidnappers. So I went to see it, and I have to say… I had fun with this!
I’m a fan of Statham and his popcorn action films, and this one was pretty much a perfect example of the kind of Statham movie I like. It delivers grounded, old-school action without any flashy CGI, just plain fighting, practical stunt work, and some brutal action scenes. Statham continues to maintain his gruff, charismatic, and super likable screen presence. This film also features a super cool location that keeps it visually engaging. That setting, combined with the action, makes it a decent movie to see in theaters.
The story is a bit familiar and slow, but it carries more character drama and emotion than most of his other movies. I really enjoyed The Beekeeper. A Working Man, not so much. I appreciated the added emotional weight here because it made it easier to invest in the story. It also gives the final blow a stronger payoff once the action kicks in.
This movie isn’t a masterpiece, nor will it be a classic. But it’s definitely one of his better films from the past few years. It’s a strong mid-tier entry in his recent action filmography. Overall, Shelter was super fun and classic Statham throughout. I would recommend it for Statham fans, but if you miss it in theaters, no big deal.
I’m going to give Shelter a B+.
