The 2025 Freehold Township Field Hockey team saw massive improvement from the 2024 season. In 2024, the team posted a 3-11-2 record. This year, however, the Coach Erica Thomas-led squad went 9-6, qualifying for both the Shore Conference Tournament and States.
At the start of the season, after a tough 5-0 loss against Howell, the team bounced back with two consecutive wins over Pinelands Regional and Saint John Vianney.
After three losses against Ocean Township, Middletown North, and Colts Neck, the team bounced back with a five-game winning streak, with wins over Freehold Boro, Holmdel, Red Bank Catholic, Brick Township, and Neptune.
To finish off the season, the team lost one more game to Middletown South, but defeated Manalapan and Lacey.
In the first round of the Shore Conference Tournament, the Patriots lost 5-0 to Wall, the favorite in that matchup.
After that, Township (7th seed) faced Kings Way (11th seed) in the State Tournament, losing 6-1 with Natalie Avino scoring the team’s lone goal.
Although all players were essential to the team’s success, some stood out. Sophomore Sydney Kreizman scored several goals and, in fact, had a hat trick against Brick Township. She also scored both goals in the win over Sayreville.
Senior Melinda Gorton starred in the shutout win over Lacey, scoring two goals.
Senior goalie Caitlin Flanigan had more than 200 saves this season and secured six shutouts.
Throughout the season, the team had worked hard, leading to a marked improvement in the record. The girls battled through every game, holding their heads high no matter the outcome.
