On November 13th at the Wicked: For Good Singapore premiere, Ariana Grande was ambushed by a fan while walking the “yellow brick road” red carpet. Fans gathered at the premiere and watched as Grande and her co-stars Cynthia Erivo and Michelle Yeoh walked down the carpet hand-in-hand when, all of a sudden, a man jumped out and sprinted toward Grande, attempting to grab her. Cynthia Erivo, who witnessed the event, immediately tried to put herself between Ariana and the fan and was visibly aggravated. Moments after Erivo stepped in, security finally took action and separated the man from Ariana. A very distressed-looking Grande was comforted by Erivo and Yeoh and reluctantly continued with the premiere.

Later, it was confirmed that the man was Johnson Wen, who has been known for crashing celebrity performances, such as those of Katy Perry and The Weeknd. He posted on his Instagram account, “Dear Ariana Grande, thank you for letting me jump on the yellow carpet with you.” Fans of the movie and of Grande herself were outraged, and news of the event quickly gained interest. Wen was arrested and held in prison for nine days. This must have been especially upsetting for Grande, who has been open about her struggles with anxiety and PTSD. Since the incident at her Manchester concert in 2017—a suicide bombing—she has spoken about her mental health troubles and the stress she has felt. This interaction was nothing short of jarring for Grande, and since the premiere, both her costars and fans have unconditionally supported her.
