Hi, it’s me, AJ Delgado! Today, I’ll be writing about all the movies coming out this Thanksgiving weekend because the lineup looks quite good. Let’s get into it!
Wicked: For Good
This is the follow-up to the film Wicked (2024) and one of the biggest movies of the holiday season. Wicked: For Good remains my most anticipated movie for the rest of the year because I’m a theater kid myself and adore the first movie. Many people are hyped about this release, and early reactions seem to be overwhelmingly positive. This is a next-level movie that will be full of surprises, and I am so excited to see it.

Sisu: Road to Revenge
This is another movie I’m excited about and one I never expected to get a sequel. Sisu is basically John Wick for Finland, with gratuitous violence, beautiful landscapes, and great acting. This sequel seems to offer more of the same, which could go either very well or very poorly, but it looks like the action will be cranked up, even more over the top, and totally bananas. So I’m excited for this!

Rental Family
A coming-of-age movie starring Brendan Fraser about an actor who lands a gig as the father of a Japanese family, only to genuinely build a bond with them. To me, that sounds like a compelling story, even though I probably won’t rush to see it because of everything else coming out. Brendan Fraser is an Oscar winner—known for The Whale—who will likely deliver another excellent performance, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Zootopia 2
It’s crazy to think it’s already been a decade since the first Zootopia debuted in theaters and made over $1 billion in the box office. In this sequel, Hopps and Wilde return for another adventure, investigating a reptile who throws the metropolis into chaos. Shakira will reprise her role, along with Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman, and Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan joins the cast. This has a lot of potential, and I hope it isn’t just a cash grab.

Eternity
A new A24 movie that feels like Defending Your Life meets Past Lives. A newly deceased woman (Elizabeth Olsen) struggles to choose whether she wants to spend eternity with her first love (Miles Teller) or her husband (Callum Turner) as the triangle unfolds in a mid-century modern limbo. This is a rom-com, so it’s not for me, but I hope others enjoy it.

Sentimental Value
A Norwegian drama that explores family, memories, and art. This is supposed to be one of the best films of the year and is one of the most critically acclaimed, directed by Joachim Trier. Starring Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgård, critics are calling it “a breathtaking piece of filmmaking, what cinema should aspire to be, a crowning achievement for Skarsgård.” I might have to go see this myself if I can.

Hamnet
Last but not least, a story of love and grief that takes inspiration from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. This epic period piece stars Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal and seems to be receiving plenty of praise. Like I said, I’m not a fan of romance, but this movie could be an exception since it’s produced by Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes. Then again, it could be a bait-and-switch situation like Jordan Peele with Him. I hope it’s good.

That is your Thanksgiving movie lineup. Will you be seeing anything, or will you just stay home and watch Stranger Things? Stay classy, Patriot Nation!
