He came to America with a love of basketball. Now, he gave up hoops for hurdles

He speaks with a choppy Caribbean accent but everything else about Freehold Township‘s Felix Lawrence is as smooth as possible.

The senior is only in his second year of hurdling, but his technique and race strategy were perfect Friday when he pulled off one of the most impressive victories at the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 4 meet at Howell High School.

Lawrence ran 54.06 to win the 400-meter hurdles but more impressive than his time was his win against North Brunswick’s Ramy Barberena.
