It’s that time again Flash Fanatics! We are back for the beginning of the big season four storyline on CW’s The Flash. The Thinker is finally here and is just getting started. This week’s review is of season four, episode seven, “Therefore I Am.” Here’s the recap in case you were not in Central City recently.

RECAP

The Thinker has been located. Team flash discovered that Clifford Devoe is the suspicious lurking figure the team should be looking for thanks to the unlikely help from the Council of Wells. The big bad was revealed to be paralyzed and married to Mechanic. Meanwhile,  Ralph Dibny continued on his elongated journey into becoming central city’s latest superhero.

Episode 4X07 Review “THEREFORE I AM”

Clifford Devoe first began his career when he was just a college professor at Oxford University. With a passion to become even smarter than before, Devoe created the thinking cap; a hat that would allow him to retain knowledge beyond any human’s power. Knowledge may be power, but team flash only has the powers right now. Barry and Joe went from being sure to who their prey was, to being absolutely puzzled. It was revealed through the memories of Devoe that Harrison Wells and the particle accelerator were causes for the success of the thinking cap. With his obsession for samurais and science, it became convincing enough evidence for Barry to further investigate Devoe during his daily life.

In season one,  Eobard Thawne turned on the particle accelerator while disguised as Harrison Wells in order to create the Flash and return home. At the press conference prior to the disaster, Eobard Thawne hinted towards Devoe’s successful future. It’s always good that The Flash keeps true to its continuity and continues to set the show on its intended comic inspired future. While it may bother some fans that the show continues to use the particle accelerator as an excuse for the creation of the villains, it helps keep the show from having to waste precious time on boring backstories for a character that will rarely appear after a mere one season. I personally think that the backstory of Devoe benefits the overall story of the show because it shows the havoc that the Reverse Flash intended to wreak upon Barry. Eobard will always be the stories’ main reason for existing,  so adding more onto his story only benefits the overall show. The Reverse Flash can never die as he is a living paradox,  so it’s also possible that we can see him appear later this season. He is one of the very few villains to have appeared in every single season.

Mrs. and Mr. Devoe (The Mechanic and Thinker).

The Arrowverse has continued to reference various other DC characters and places throughout its lifespan and tonight featured one of my favorite comicbook villains to get a mention. Jack the Ripper is well known for his appearance in the cult classic Gotham By Gaslight. While it’s unlikely that he will appear on the show, it’s always nice to hear the names being ousted out every now and then during the show. Legends Of Tomorrow did a Gotham by Gaslight themed episode three weeks ago except rather than featuring Jack the Ripper, Damien Darhk took his place.

My problem with the episode was the fact that the show continued to use its famous excuse “I’ll go talk to him/Can we have a moment.” Well, can we have a minute writers? This poor excuse to have a private conversation is absolutely unneeded. It’s important that they do not continue to use this excuse as it clouded season three. It’s probably more common to hear this phrase then see team flash take home a victory each week. Its poor writing and has plagued Arrow and The Flash for the past two seasons. Some of the Barry and Iris drama is also unbearable. It’s better off that the show drifts as far away from its key relationships as it possibly can. The line “we are the flash” is just wrong. Let’s hope they stop repeating these mistakes.

The Thinker clearly sees all as he admitted to Barry Allen that he knows everything he has done. Devoe twisted rat race began. His knowledge of the Flash’s past mistakes and defeats will help him, but the unthinkable mind most likely will not be able to stop the fastest man alive.

Overall we got a good episode tonight. Its substantial for the show to split itself from its comic continuity throu

Barry and Iris’s final week before the big wedding day.

gh larger differences and The Flash continues to make smart changes to a seven decade old hero’s previous written stories. The Flash proceeds to not only have a successful season, but a very diverse season filled with plenty of neat references and surprises.

Predictions

Next week is time for Earth’s mightiest heroes to assemble in order to fight off the threats breaching in from Earth X. It’s safe to assume next week will have a major death and have some unexpected team ups such as Citizen Cold and Green Arrow. It also will finally be the wedding between Barry Allen and Iris West. Kid Flash also returned but it’s likely that he is just back for the crossover. Just remember that the special crossover will air on Monday and Tuesday night from 8:00 P.M to 10:00 P.M. Heres your preview for next week!
