The 2024 CFB season was… a season, all right. You had so many games played out, that either some were classics, blowouts, or just straight-up weird. Such as that with life, college football is home to many surprises and oddities. Looking back at these games and seeing how the season turned out to be for the teams, the oddities are clear as day. And for these six games near the beginning of the season, these will end up fitting all the criteria of just weird games, that will probably be lost through time:
Week 1
Boston College @ Florida St: BC wins 28-13
Remember how we all thought that Florida State still had a chance at the playoffs, even after suffering an upset to Georgia Tech? “Offense still looked good and the defense as well, they just so happened to get upset, happens all the time”-is what everyone said. And then…well that was the peak of their season. Same for Boston College too, everyone remembered them for this game and no others.
North Dakota St @ Colorado: Colorado wins 31-26
Didn’t we all want NDST to beat Colorado that badly? They hyped themselves as dark, revengeful spirits, ready to take over College Football. And unfortunately, NDST came up so close, yet so far. At least they won the FCS championship, Colorado couldn’t even win a bowl game to save their lives, yet the announcers were on that hype train until the very end.
Abilene Christian @ Texas Tech: Texas Tech wins in OT 52-51
Did you know about this game? I bet you didn’t, and don’t worry I didn’t either. From what I can tell, ABU had a chance to win it after battling back a massive deficit and just needed to convert a two-point conversion in OT. Unfortunately, the chaos didn’t spread that much in terms of FBS/FCS play, so Texas Tech survived by the skin of its teeth.
Week 2
Arkansas @ Oklahoma St: Oklahoma St wins in 2OT 39-31
Oh, Oklahoma St. was ranked to start the season and was looking to claim the BIG12 title when Texas decided to leave. And this game being one of the forgotten classics of the season, they looked poised to finally win it all. And then they proceed to not win a single game in their conference, Ollie Gordon went missing, and even Arkansas won a bowl game.
BYU @ SMU: BYU wins 18-13
The only loss that SMU suffered in the regular season was losing to a surprising BYU team that made headlines throughout the season, as well as having a shot at the playoffs. It ended with the opposite happening, SMU being a newcomer to the conference making the playoffs, and BYU unfortunately suffering the 2024 Pac-12 Cursed Kansas Jayhawks
USF @ Alabama: Alabama wins 42-16
Don’t let this final score fool you. Just like last year, USF actually hung around with the Tide, until the 4th quarter. But unlike the tide, the Bulls managed to get a bowl win on Christmas Day. The Tide…well you already know what happened ever since
