Song of the Week: “Colours” by Grouplove

Song of the Week: Colours by Grouplove

Melissa Ng, Music Columnist

If you need a band that is always cheerful, bubbly and playing festivals, Grouplove should be your go to. There are many words to describe them: quirky, spirited, eccentric, etc.–the list does not end. Grouplove is well-rounded with unique lyrics, upbeat music, and effervescent concerts; they are perfect to add to any summer playlist.

As a four-member band, Grouplove came together one by one in 2009 on individual trips to Greece. Over time they gravitated together, combining all of their skills and made their dreams come true. They signed to Atlantic Records and began to tour with Florence and the Machine and Foster the People. Grouplove released their first debut album Never Trust a Happy Song in 2011 and later began to sell out of all their shows.

Although Grouplove is known for their single, “Tongue Tied,” I believe “Colours” is as good. This sunny jam is filled with a rush of guitar and keyboards. All of their songs seem to test their limits and experiment with their sounds; “Colours” is the perfect end result. The hippie song digresses in lyrics, but sticks with the boisterous, elated jaunt. Catch them live at all the best music festivals this year.
