Song of the Week: “Sippy Cup” by Melanie Martinez
April 5, 2016
The music of Melanie Martinez is either a hit or miss. People either adore her or are creeped out by her (hopefully you feel the same way I do). I love Melanie; her style is unique and unable to be replicated. She pulls off her aesthetic so well I kinda wish I was her. Many people don’t understand her music because she has a way of glamorizing a child’s lifestyle and ruining it by breaking open the harsh problems some people face behind closed doors. She strives to tell a story through her songs, and she is doing a fantastic job at it.
Melanie Martinez began her career in 2012 by appearing as a contestant on hit TV show, The Voice. Afterwards, she worked independently and then signed to Atlantic Records, but still funded the production of her own music videos. She released her debut album, Cry Baby, in 2015 with her song “Carousel” becoming the theme song for the FX series, American Horror Story: Freak Show.
“Sippy Cup” by Melanie Martinez is one of my favorite songs off of “Cry Baby.” Every single line contains symbolism connecting basic childhood items to an unstable home life. Martinez likes to play around with mock sounds and alternative synths. “Sippy Cup” narrates the undertone of a seemingly perfect American lifestyle that hides dirty secrets such as affairs, drug addiction, and alcoholism. Listen to the song and realize that not every family is as perfect as they seem.
