“Heavydirtysoul” by Twenty One Pilots – Music Video Review

Erica Singh, Staff Writer

So before we get into the video, let’s start with some theories first. So, there is a twitter account called “@blurryface” which fans believe is run by the lead singer, Tyler. In a few words if you don’t know who blurryface is, basically it is a character that was made up by Tyler and he uses this character to express his bad inner thoughts. The twitter account tweeted this:

This tweet had so many theories behind it but the biggest one was that there was one more music video before the “blurryface era” was over. The account tweeted this February second and the music video came out on February third. If you look close enough to the profile picture, it’s a picture of Tyler Joseph upside down in a car with red X’s over his eyes. Also, blurryface deleted this tweet after fans started to catch onto his theory.

If you need some extra general information about blurryface is, then here’s a bit more explanation.

Twenty One Pilots released an album called “Blurryface” and throughout some songs you can hear a few messages from Tyler asking to help get rid of Blurryface. Blurryface is the mysterious and dark voice heard on some tracks off the album. Such as “Stressed Out,” a very popular song still heard on the radio to this day. Throughout the pre-chorus, Tyler sings, “My name is blurryface and I care what you think” and towards the very end of the song you can hear blurryface singing the song as well and in the music video Tyler is seen with red eyes and a dark background singing as blurryface. There are many more songs blurryface is featured on such as the last track of the album “Goner” where Tyler sings, “I’ve got two faces, blurry’s the one i’m not I need your help to take him out” which is a cry for help to the fans asking for help to get rid of blurryface.
So now onto the music video, finally.

The music video starts off with the noise of crackling fire and the the screen flips to Tyler Joseph in a car with an “unknown” driver. The drummer, Josh Dun is seen in the middle of the road playing his drums. The music begins to play and Tyler begins to rap, as we get closer to the chorus, the tire from the car falls off and the car seems as if it’s going to hit Josh but it swerves out of the way and the flaming tire sets his drums ablaze. Tyler looks as if he is trying to talk to the driver of the car asking, “can you save my heavy dirty soul for me?” The car is driving past Josh again and again almost hitting him but swerves out of the way at the very last second. The scene cuts from Tyler singing to the back of the driver and it is a masked dark character that is most definitely Blurryface which is why I explained who he is. The video then cuts back to Tyler as he sings then again to the front seat but this time there’s nobody driving, it’s literally an empty seat but the car is still moving. As the song goes on, the beat drops dramatically and all of the doors fall off, and then the roof falls off yet the car is somehow still driving. The driver (or blurryface) is nowhere to be seen as the car dangerously falls apart. Tyler stands up in the little pieces left of the car and continues to sing. The car sets on fire and Tyler has no choice but to jump out and ironically he jumped out of the car right in front of Josh (who is still playing the drums!) Tyler continues to sing and Josh continues to drum, the car sets on fire right behind them and then the song finishes with a view of the severely damaged car in the background and the scene goes black. The video is ended off with Tyler in the car as if that all happened in his imagination.

My thoughts/theories

I just want to start off by saying this video is simply astonishing. I have so many theories behind the meaning of this video and i’m so excited to share it with everyone. So, let’s start off with the blurryface tweets. This was clearly stating that there was one more day until the video, but was it stating that it was the the last video? I completely believe this was the last video off of Blurryface because Josh Dun posted on his instagram story a picture of him playing the drums with X’s over his eyes. Which could have either been hinting at the Blurryface twitter or the music video.

Also, if you’ve seen Twenty One Pilots live for the second leg of the ERS tour, you would know that Josh had a mini drum battle with a virtual version of himself and toward the end the virtual one’s head blows up (graphic) and the real Josh Dun is deemed the winner.

Josh also had his twitter name as “spooky jim christmas” all through 2016 and changed it the day before christmas of 2016 which shows that that could have been his version of blurryface and he defeated it.

The music video ends with Tyler back in the car like nothing happened so maybe he imagined defeating his blurryface or he defeated his blurryface and someone else is driving, I really don’t know but I really believe blurryface is truly over. The director of the music video posted a picture on his instagram with this caption but later edited it and took out the part where it says, “conclusion to the blurry face era” which drove fan’s absolutely insane. Is it the end? Did he mean to put that there? Was he not supposed to say anything? We do not know.I think at this point it’s up to anyone to decide what they believe.

The thing about Twenty One Pilots is they throw all of these subliminal messages in their songs but it’s up to the fans to crack the code. If I missed any possible theories then comment them below.
