BBC’s Sherlock is a television series that offers a modern-take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous character, detective Sherlock Holmes (played by Benedict Cumberbatch). Sherlock is accompanied by his trusted friend John Watson (Martin Freeman) as the duo utilize their skills of deduction and enhanced perception to solve complex crimes and mysteries in modern-day London. First aired in 2010, the show’s seasons are comprised of only 3 episodes each, each episode the length of a typical movie. This January 1st, the long-awaited season premiere of Sherlock aired- nearly 3 years since the end of the show’s last season, which aired in early 2014. Sherlock’s season premiere drew an estimated 8.1 million viewers

Though the 4th season of BBC’s thrilling series is already underway (2 out of 3 episodes have aired), those who haven’t seen it can still catch up here. According to the show’s producer, Mark Gatiss (who also plays Sherlock’s brother Mycroft), this season is supposedly much darker than the show’s previous seasons. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Gatiss admitted, ““What’s very exciting about these three episodes is to really play the repercussions of the last season. There are lots of things that come to fruition this season which we have been seeding for a while. We knew we were going to get here. And, with the things that we’ve been planning, the darkness was sort of inevitable. They’re not things that could have happened any time, and where we get to is a very different place to where we’ve been before.” If you haven’t seen the first 3 seasons of the show, not much can be revealed about the plot of this upcoming season without spoiling them, but it is expected to delve further into the secretive past/childhood of Sherlock Holmes. Fans can definitely expect more mind-bending mysteries and thrilling action!

This season of Sherlock is sure to be an excellent continuation of the series. As Sherlock Holmes would say himself, “The game is on!”
