Considering Doctor Strange’s stunning visual effects, unique plot-line, and outstanding acting, it isn’t strange that this latest hit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe debuted at number 1 at the box office and made $85 million in its opening weekend. Doctor Strange is an incredibly engaging film guaranteed to entertain all viewers- even those who are new to the world of comic-book movies.

Marvel Studios’ newest triumph tells the tale of Dr. Steven Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), an arrogant yet talented surgeon who relies on his skills and money to bring him happiness. When a tragedy occurs that robs him of his luxurious lifestyle, Strange is forced to turn to unusual sources to find the fulfillment he seeks- but finds something much more mystical with the help of the elusive Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). When the fate of the world is threatened by an otherworldly entity, Strange must defend the world using his newfound powers while struggling with his inner conflicts.

While Doctor Strange is a fantastic film as a whole, some elements are flawed. The beginning of the movie moves a bit slowly at first, and takes a bit too long to get into the main story. A bit of time is wasted on unnecessary exposition, and it may bore impatient audiences. In addition, Steven Strange is very unlikable at first, and at times hard to root for due to his personality. Personally, I wish the relationship between Steven and his clever coworker/love interest Dr. Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) was developed a bit more, as it is glossed over in the movie.

Though Doctor Strange possesses a few minor flaws, it also has many qualities that contribute to its overall success as a movie. The film’s plot is extremely well-executed, and director Scott Derrickson manages to portray the magic in the film in a way that isn’t “cheesy” or overdone. Though the concept and logic behind the sorcery in the film is extensive, it is presented so that the viewer always has a basic understanding of what’s going on. Benedict Cumberbatch also does an outstanding job creating the persona of Steven Strange, and brings the character to life. The film also fits well into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (fans may have seen films such as The Avengers and Captain America) in regards to quality of visuals, plot, and overall execution, but its whimsy and magic makes it a refreshing contrast to the technology-centered nature that is typical of most Marvel films.

Overall, Doctor Strange is a thrilling, action-packed film that delves into the unknown world of sorcery. With comedic elements and even a touch of romance, this film has something for everyone to enjoy. Even if you think superhero movies aren’t your “thing,” give Doctor Strange a try this weekend!
