The Pat Press’s Songs of the Summer of ’17

The Pat Presss Songs of the Summer of 17

Erica Singh, Staff Writer

With summer dimming down and society norms pointing its main priorities toward the orange and red themed decorations and the pumpkin spice flavored… everything, I thought it would be relevant to reminisce 10 of 2017’s greatest summer bops.

Starting at #10, “Attention” by Charlie Puth was a massive hit all summer, and is still frequently played on the radio. The shady song starts with a dark and mysterious beat that slowly leads into a simple beat but his voice and extremely catchy lyrics are what draws attention to the song (see what I did there). The song explains how someone is clearly only drawing attention to themselves and clearly playing hard to get. Overall, this song is easily memorized and will surely have heads bopping along to the beat

#9 “Stay” by Zedd ft Alessia Cara was the song that you heard at every pool party ever. The positive vibes of the song give you dancing, partying and having fun. The lyrics explain how she wants someone to stay with her a little bit longer. When the beat drops, all feet are tapping along to the song or your body is pulling you like a magnet along to the catchy beat of the song.

#8 “XO TOUR Llif3” by Lil Uzi Vert was a cool beat that everyone recognized once the song started. Almost every lyric is known by the majority of people. The most popular lyric from the song that you would hear everyone sing is “push me to the edge all my friends are dead,” if you were wondering where that lyric came from, there’s your answer. This fast beat rap song talks about the losses and gains in his life.

#7 “Body Like a Back Road” by Sam Hunt, the song that was half hated and half loved, there was no in between. The obvious country background to it was crucial for this song to be a part of this list. Most times country songs are not introduced to popularity (only in the mainstream views) but this song was acceptable for pop charts and it surely found its way to being a top ten hit! This song is explaining how great taking time to spend time with a partner is. Clearly, the singer describes his partner in various ways throughout the song. Either way this hit was surely one to remember.

#6 “Slow Hands” by Niall Horan is an upbeat and fun song with a hint of indie to it. After One Direction parted ways, a lot of their solo songs made billboard charts, including this one. This song has hints of everything in it. The lyrics are what grab attention to people the most because throughout the song Niall talks about how bad he wants his dreams to come true with someone he has feelings for. The tone of voice Niall has throughout the song sounds somewhat like a whisper but once he hits the chorus he goes back to his classic soft voice.

#5 “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” by Shawn Mendes starts upbeat and automatically bridges into a cool sounding tone which then leads up to the beat dropping and the song to go fast pace into a easily danceable song. This song was admired by so many people because it’s catchy chorus repeating the title over and over again. The lyrics talk about coming back for more in a person and wanting more from the person. But, this song is still super catchy and fun to sing along to.

#4 “Shape Of You” by Ed Sheeran starts off with a beat that automatically pulls you in to keep you listening and moving to it. Ed’s amazing voice starts with explaining his story about a girl which then leads up to the chorus which is undeniably super catchy. If this song started playing randomly 9/10 people would start singing along to it. The other 1/10 would just complain because they’ve heard it play so much. This song still plays on the radio a lot today which can be good but also bad because a lot of people define this song as overplayed nowadays since it is played so frequently. Besides this song being played a lot, it is very catchy and a great song that summarized summer of 2017.

#3 “I’m The One” by DJ Khalid featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper, and Lil Wayne was the song that you heard playing on 3 different radio stations at once but somehow never got tired of it. The different people rapping and singing in the song make this song so fun to sing along to. The song starts off with an impressively catchy beat that already has you bopping your head. It starts off with Justin Bieber singing the chorus. Then, leads up to Quavo rapping which then goes back to Justin. After, Chance The Rapper starts rapping which then goes back to Justin. Lastly, Lil Wayne raps and one last time you hear Justin sing the well known chorus. This song basically explains how perfect each guy is for a certain girl which already has every 13 year old Bieber fan going crazy over this song hoping he’s singing to them. Overall, this song has a lot of hits and its upbeat tone makes it clear how great this song is.

#2 “That’s What I Like” by Bruno Mars is the song you either love or hate, there is literally no in between. Like the other songs, if this song started playing, guaranteed 9/10 people would sing or dance to it and the 1/10 would just groan because it’s the 4th time they’ve heard it in the past hour on the radio and if they have to hear the obnoxiously amazing beat again they’re going to go crazy. This song starts out immediately with a strong beat that, like the other songs, pulls you in. Bruno starts off his song by talking about all the luxuries he has. Assuming he’s explaining all of this to a female as a way of bragging in hopes to get her to like him. The song leads up to a chorus you can’t find your way out of dancing to it. Overall, this song is number 2 on this list for a very good reason.

Finally ending this off with #1 is “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber. This song has literally been the most streamed song with over 3.3 million sales. The music video also just reached 3.9 billion times! It’s the second fastest video to reach 1 billion (right behind “Hello” by Adele). This song found its way to fame right around February, a month after it was released. Ever since then, it’s been a track still commonly played on the radio, 9 months later! The lyrics of the song are mostly in spanish and they talk about wanting to pursue a relationship in a smooth way. This song was definitely a great hit of the summer
