The excitement of the Cubs after winning the World Series

The Curses of the Teams

Through an impressive 7 game series the Cubs come out on top winning 8 to 7 in the tenth inning of Game 7, but this had to start somewhere. Flashback to 1908, Al Capone was only 9, Babe Ruth was 13, the Model T was being mass produced and selling for $908, there were only 46 states, and many more things that were small at the time, but abnormal to modern day people. This was the last time the Cubs won a world series, and it would be 108 years before they would win again. This is thanks to the “Billy Goat Curse” which was put into play during the 1945 world series and the Cubs were winning the series 2 to 1. There was a man named William “Billy Goat” Sianas, who brought his goat everywhere with him. He adopted his goat when it fell out of a truck, and it walked into his tavern. He was kicked out of the stadium because the owner got complaints about the goat, saying it smelled, which it most likely did, so when Sianas went back to his tavern, he placed a curse on the Cubs. After this incident the Cubs have not been able to win a Word Series, for that matter haven’t even made it to one, not until 71 years later. Where they faced the Cleveland Indians.

Since the Indians played well in the past it is surprising that they haven’t won a World Series since 1948. Whoever won this World Series, it would be an enormous moment for either ballclub. They also have a couple curses of their own. One of the two curses they have is the “Curse of Rocky Colavito.” Rocky Colavito was a baseball player who played for the Cleveland Indians (1955-1959 and 1965-1967), the Detroit Tigers (1960-1963), Kansas City Athletics (1964), Chicago White Socks (1967), Los Angeles Dodgers (1968), and the New York Yankees (1968). Colavito wasn’t the one who cursed the team, the Indians have just not been able to win a world series since they traded him. This is only one off the two curses that the Indians have on them they also have, the “Curse of Chief Wahoo.” In 1947 the Indians their adopted their Native American chief logo, in 1951 it was remade with a red face. The team has been plagued with bad luck ever since. Many people say it’s due to the depiction of their logo in 1951.

Overall Records

In the end the Chicago Cubs won the World series, but there was also records set by both teams. The Cubs set the following records one, Jake Arrieta delivered the longest no-hitter in the beginning of a World Series since 1969 at 5 1/3 innings, while in 1969 Mets’ Jerry Koosman, who pitched 6 innings without a hit allowed. Second of all, Addison Russel tied for the most amount of RBIs (Runs Batted In) with an outstanding 6 RBIs, to get these Russel had to hit a 2 RBI double in the 1st inning and a big Grand Slam in the 3rd inning, which really helped the ballclub get to game 7. Third Dexter Fowler hit the first leadoff homer in a winner-take-all World Series game. Finally the now retired David Ross holds a record for the oldest player to hit a homer in Game 7 of a World series at 39 years and 228 days. Also Kyle Schwarber was the first position player to get no hits during the season, but get his first hit in the World Series.

Now the near winners, who lost in Game 7 by a single run, The Indians. First of all Corey Kluber struck out 8 players in the first three innings, which is a new World Series record. Second of all the Indians set a new Major League record of 5 shutouts in a single postseason, after Game 3. A common theme between the clubs is, they only set records in the games they won.

In the end, this was an extremely historical world series, whether in be the Cubs curse finally being broken, or records being set and broken. It was a great World series, and it might be the best for years to come. Personally I believe the best part was Kris Bryant running at 20MPH to score from first.
