Mr. Hoffman by Vin Conte

”One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings.” Carl Jung

Throughout elementary school English was always one of my worst subjects. I did not enjoy reading books or having to write essays. This went on until sophomore year when I got Mr.Hoffman as a teacher. I remember not being excited to have my English class early in the morning and having to sit there would be worse. A week into the class though Mr .Hoffman started reading us a play out of the textbook. I remember him reading it in all different voices and being very into the story, which made the whole class interested. In the story as well. After that we had our first essay of the year. I was never very good at writing, and thought that I would get a bad grade on the essay. When we got the assignment paper there were examples on how every paragraph should be written, which really helped me through the paper. I remember getting the grade back and being very happy. If I remember right it was also one of the highest grades i had ever gotten on a writing assignment ever. Last, I remember having to write down vocabulary words every day before class. I admit that I didn’t like doing that, but when I took my first SAT some of the exact words from that class were on the test. Even words that were not exactly on the board were more understandable because of the class. I felt after the class that I had genuinely learned new things, and developed a new appreciation for English class, which I had never really cared for much. I think it is important for a teacher to help us succeed in their class, but it is more important for us to learn things that will benefit us in life.
