Katies Couture: Fashion Throughout History

Kathleen Troger, Staff Writer

Welcome  to the second article of Katie’s Couture! This week, we’re discussing fashion throughout history – specifically, from 1920 – 2009.

The 1920s

The roaring twenties were a breakthrough for fashion. The skirt hems reached mid-calf, whereas in the 1910s, they went down to the ankles. Flapper outfits were all the rage. The silhouette was “boyish” and the dresses were a more tubular shape. The colors were bright and flashy.

The 1930s

1930s fashion was more feminine compared to the 20s. Dresses were cinched in at the waist, usually with patterns. The dresses also featured large shoulders and skirts that flared at the bottom.

The 1940s

Wartime greatly influenced fashion during the 40s. The lack of fabric made dresses shorter and more fitted. The clothes were practical and simple.

The 1950s

Dior’s new look was introduced in the late 40s, and became a big trend for the 50s. It consisted of a tight-fitting bodice and a full skirt. Tight dresses were also popular at the time.

The 1960s

Fashion was bold in the 1960s. The mini-skirt was introduced by Mary Quant. Dresses were straight up and down, similar to the 20s. Tight sweaters, known as “skinny ribs” were another popular fashion choice. Unisex dressing also became a trend during the late 60s. The style was younger-looking than the decades before.

The 1970s

The unisex trend of the 60s carried into the 70s, but it became more extreme. Glam rock became popular and was worn by many rock bands. It consisted of bright colors, glitter, and clashing patterns. Punk was introduced from England in 1976. The point of punk fashion was to shock.

The 1980s

Everything in the 80s was bold- hair, shoulder pads, colors, even makeup. From acid-wash jeans to neon leg warmers, the 80s were a crazy era for fashion. Fashion was influenced heavily by popular artists such as Madonna and Michael Jackson.

The 1990s

Many people consider the 1990s to have been “anti-fashion.” Clothing styles were casual and grungy. The color palette was dark, muted tones. Flannel and baggy pants were popular at the time. A big influence for fashion was the movie “Clueless” from 1995. This was what created the “preppy look” that was also popular for the 90s.

The 2000s

Y2K fashion was full of denim, low waisted pants, cropped shirts, and bright colors. However, neutral colors were popular as well. Paris Hilton was a fashion icon and influence of the time. Large jewelry was often incorporated into outfits.
