September Athlete of the Month: Herman Colbert

Lex Nelsen, Staff Writer

September Athlete of the Month Herman Colbert sat down with us to talk about himself and his time at Freehold Township.

What position do you play in soccer?

– I am a striker.

Is there anything that you like or dislike about playing striker?

– No, I love everything about it.

How were you introduced to soccer?

– I started playing soccer at the age of three, and I’ve just been around it my entire life.

Do you play any other sports or did you play any other sports when you were younger?

– I played a lot. I played soccer, basketball, baseball, and lacrosse, but now I’m just strictly soccer and I might go back to basketball and lacrosse this year.

Do you have a favorite number you’ve always liked to wear?

– Yeah, number one, because I feel like there’s only one person stopping me from accomplishing all of my goals, and that’s myself. If I put my mind to it I believe I can achieve it.

What is your favorite memory while playing at Township?

– My favorite memory has got to be the Shore Conference Tournament Finals, where Josh hit the game-winning penalty kick for the win.

Who is your favorite professional player and how did he impact your game?

– It would probably be Lionel Messi. I just love watching him play. He’s not the biggest on the field but he does show that he has the most heart and he’s the most hardworking.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of soccer?

– I love just spending time with my family and friends.

What is your favorite food to eat after a game?

– Probably a chicken parm sub from Dusal’s.

Do you have any rituals or superstitions before a game?

– Before, not really. I just listen to the same playlist; I always try to get locked in before a game. I always listen to the same song, called “Wins and Losses”, before warming up for a game.

What is your favorite training or practice drill?

– I don’t really have a favorite practice drill. I just try to work hard and give 100%, so that I can get ready for a game.

Other than soccer, do you have a second favorite sport to watch or play?

– Probably basketball. My favorite team is the Chicago Bulls, but I also like watching football. My favorite football team is the Dallas Cowboys.

If you could give advice to a young soccer player, what would it be?

– Just keep working hard. Keep working for your goals, and they’ll eventually come. Don’t let anybody tell them that they can’t do anything. They put their mind to it, they can go out and get it.

Thanks to Herman Colbert and good luck for the rest of your season!
