Kiersten’s Thursday Jams (1/7/21)

Kiersten Buckley, Co-Editor in Chief

Happy first Thursday of 2021, everyone! You know what that means…another Thursday Jams! I am wishing each and every one of you a happy and healthy new year! 2021 may seem full of uncertainty right now, but positivity is always integral in achieving a happy and prosperous new year. So, I am excited to share some new songs with everyone that will hopefully make you all smile and brighten your 2021!

Everything She Wants- Wham!

For the first song this week, we are taking a trip back in time to the 1980s! I’m sure we all wish we could do that right now…but in the meantime, listening to this synthesized 80s tune will certainly suffice! To me, this song is a fun and upbeat guilty pleasure that stands out from most tunes on my playlists. Performed by classic band “Wham!”, the synthesizer and drum combination in the instrumentals in this song will truly transport you to a different, funky world when you close your eyes. You should listen to this song if you like music that makes you want to get up and dance, or catchy music!

Kyoto- Phoebe Bridgers

Kyoto is a calming, light rock song that reminds me of a peaceful picnic in a flower field. This tune comes straight off of Bridgers’ Grammy nominated album, Punisher. Bridgers is also nominated for best new artist at the Grammys, and the track Kyoto specifically is nominated for best rock song and best rock performance! If that doesn’t entice you enough to listen to the song, Kyoto also has incredibly brilliant lyrics that tell a story of dreaming and change. I feel like we could really use these uplifting themes in 2021! You should listen to this song if you enjoy light rock music, or strong female vocalists.

Stargazing- The Neighborhood

Stargazing comes off of “The Neighborhood’s” most recent album, Chip Chrome and The Mono-Tones, which was released last month. Despite its recent release, the song has already amassed almost 6,700,00 streams on Spotify! By isolating lead singer Jesse Rutherford’s vocals and pairing them with a synthesizer and a mellow guitar, a dreamy melody is created in the instrumentals. The chorus is also incredibly catchy, and the lyrics tell a sweet love story. You should listen to this tune if you like indie music, or dreamy and relaxing music.

What Do You Want From Me Tonight?- Sidney Gish

Closing off this week’s edition is What Do You Want From Me Tonight? by Sidney Gish- which has quickly become one of my favorite songs recently. Rising indie artist Sidney Gish sings her heart out in this bubbly, lo-fi tune. This track relies solely on Gish’s emotional, raw voice and her guitar, making the song overall more powerful. Her heartfelt lyrics talk of her life story and her feelings of inadequacy, which always give me chills! You should listen to this song if you like strong female vocalists or music with interesting lyrics.
