Octagon January Update

Octagon January Update

Megan Schulman, Octagon Liaison

January marks a new year, which means new opportunities to volunteer!

The Octagon Club is hosting a book drive. Now through February 10th, bring all your old books to the Media Center. A drop-off box is set up and labeled. Books collected for elementary school kids will be going to the Birthday Book Club of the Asbury Park school system, and books collected for older kids will be going to Girl Up’s “Books For Africa Program” in Liberia. All books collected will be going to a great cause!

Additionally, the Octagon Club will be involved with “Teens for Jeans” this month. The program is sponsored by Aeropostale. Jen Roberto, an FTHS student and Aeropostale employee who is involved in the program, says,  “Teens for Jeans is a great organization which distributes recycled jeans to homeless teens in the Monmouth and Ocean counties.” The program involves collecting new or old pairs of jeans. Aeropostale takes the collections and distributes the jeans throughout Monmouth and Ocean County. In return for the gracious donations, Aeropostale will send you a $5 coupon for donating if you include your name and address on the bag in which you donate the jeans. Drop off all jean donations to room C106. There will be a box in the room specifically labeled for the jeans. Students have from now until February 10th to donate, so bring in those jeans!

Also, Octagon Club is partnering up with Habitat for Humanity to help them open their new store in Freehold Borough. Volunteers are needed Friday, January 30th as well as Saturday, January 31st to help out in the store. On Friday, the volunteers will be helping at the party for opening day, setting up, greeting the guests, and cleaning up. As for Saturday, the volunteers will be assisting customers and keeping the store clean and presentable. Habitat for Humanity is a great organization, and the volunteers feel helping out at this new store is a great way to give back!

Do you like playing games with your friends and having a good time? Well, get ready for Game Night! The Octagon Club will be hosting game night in February. Games like ping-pong, Taboo, and Twister will all be included. Students will be able to create teams of eight to compete against other students in the school. The goal of this night is to raise money for a non-profit organization. Therefore, each team will sponsor an organization, and the winning team’s organization will receive all the proceeds from the night. Who doesn’t like having fun while being able to give back to a great cause? Start putting a team together now and prepare for this awesome game night in February!
