Trivia Crack: A New App Sweeping the Nation

Trivia Crack: A New App Sweeping the Nation

Lauren Lavelle, Editor-in-Chief

The first experience I had with the popular trivia app, Trivia Crack, was an interesting one. It consisted of my sister shoving her diamond studded iPhone under my nose and screaming, “What famous celebrity was Aladdin modeled after?” into my right ear.

I thought about it for a minute; who did Aladdin look like? Brad Pitt? No. Harrison Ford? No, the jaw is completely off.

“Come on, I only have ten seconds!” she screamed waving her hands frantically around her face.

I glanced down at the list of possible answers illuminating her phone screen and quickly yelled, “Tom Cruise!” just as the timer was about to run out. She tapped on his name, which turned green, an indication she had gotten the question right, and began to jump up and down.

“Yes! I won, I won!”

Of course, I was confused. How does knowing Aladdin’s doppelganger help someone win something? And what type of game asks such a question anyway?

A few days later, my questions were answered when, during class, someone asked my history teacher for the definition of a molecule. About fifteen separate voices chimed in all shouting something along the lines of, “Oh I had that one yesterday! It’s ‘a group of particles’.”

I was baffled to say the least. How could an app with the main purpose of asking ridiculous trivia questions become so popular so fast?

Trivia Crack had its North American debut in November of 2014. As of right now, it holds the coveted spot of most downloaded game in the Apple App store, and has recently reached 50,000 downloads a day, making that about 65 million downloads in total.

The game is divided up into six basic categories: art, history, sports, science, geography, and entertainment. First, the player must spin the dial in order to determine which category their question will come from. He or she will then be presented with a trivia question ranging from painfully easy to mind numbingly hard. The player is given 25 seconds to choose one of four options before running out of time and passing the turn onto his or her opponent. If the player answers correctly though, he or she is given another shot at a different question. Once three in a row are answered correctly, the player can either challenge his or her opponent or answer another question for a crown. After winning all six crowns, the player is deemed the winner of the game and has the option of dueling it out once again.

When I asked about the app, most people had the same reaction.

“I love it!” said Carine Fiumara, a junior. “I just got it a few days ago and I’m already addicted!”

Lucy Cacace, also a junior, expressed similar feelings stating that she “plays all the time” and likes it a lot but, “hates losing to people.”

The only negative reaction I received came from Brianna Sommers, a senior who doesn’t think Trivia Crack will have a very long shelf life.

“Yes, I agree it’s very addicting but, honestly, I’m kind of over it now. It’s a fad, like Angry Birds and Temple Run.”

After spending a few weeks glancing over my friends’ shoulders and answering the occasional question about Zac Efron, I finally caved and downloaded the app myself. Not only did I realize I’m a really good guesser, but I began to genuinely enjoy learning the random facts I had previously thought were so absurd.

I have no doubt that Trivia Crack will continue to grow within the coming months. With that being said though, I don’t feel that it will remain number one forever. There will always be something bigger and better waiting on the horizon but, right now, I’m content with figuring out Aladdin’s celebrity twin.
