Flash Fix With Marc Kaliroff: Elongated Journey Into the Night – Season 4 Episode 4

Marc Kaliroff, Staff Writer

It’s that time again Flash Fanatics!  The Flash on the CW is starting to bring in new heroes this season started with one of the most obscure superheroes in D.C’s history. This review is for The Flash season four, episode four: Elongated Journey Into the Night. As usual, let’s start with a recap.

RECAP

Last week, Barry fought against Hazard, lady luck herself. Barry and Iris continued to push their relationship forward while Clifford Devoe continued to pursue the metahumans created during Barry’s trip back. Harrison wells reunited with Team Flash and Wally West left the team in order to pursue his own goals. It was a slow week, but the show had an opportunity to develop characters.

Episode 4X04 Review “ELONGATED JOURNEY INTO THE NIGHT”

Danny Trejo as Gypsy’s father “Breacher.”

Famous actor Danny Trejo made his debut on The Flash as antihero “Breacher,” Gypsy’s father. Breacher came to inspect Cisco and make sure that he will not have to kill another of Gypsy’s boyfriends. The scratchy voice assassin makes a living off killing criminals who travel the multiverse just like her daughter. The big difference between him and his daughter is the fact that he is the boss of the police force that silences these criminals.

Barry and Joe begin searching for the other missing metahumans. One of the metahumans affected on the bus was Ralph Dibny, a banished Central City Police Station officer who previously worked with Barry and Joe. Ralph Dibny is The Elongated Man, a metahuman who can stretch his entire body at long lengths. This Jim Carrey impersonator has started his own private detective agency. It’s a one man job; literally! Just like in the comics, Ralph Dibny is a complete failure and is constantly beaten by his clients more than criminals. He’s a leech looking for easy targets to suck money out of since he can barely make a living.

Caitlin and Harry begin to investigate more into how Ralph’s body actually works, while Barry, Iris, and Joe go out to find the pair of criminals attempting to kill Ralph. The team proves unsuccessful in finding evidence as the criminals had previously loaded up Ralph’s entire apartment with explosive devices. All they could grab from the apartment was a haircone. Cisco, meanwhile, is challenged to a twenty four hour fight with Breacher and can not escape the challenge. Harrison Wells attempts to give Cisco some Arnold Schwarzenegger advice on how to beat Breacher.

Speaking of Harrison Wells, his involvement continues to improve the show. Although he may not have a reasonable reason to be there as of right now,he still remains the best character on the show. The character is a great compromise to the majority of team Flash. Having a more serious character with a lot of witt makes him fit in, not only perfectly, but helps give him more purpose to the show. While Barry and Cisco may be the comedians, it’s good to have a serious character that keeps the amount of comedy in check.

Barry and Joe shared a couple drinks and coped with their problems together. Both are in a tough situation. Joe is having child with his possible soon to be second wife and Barry continues to struggle adjusting to the new ways of team Flash. Both their problems will definitely create good drama this season. Speaking of good drama, Cisco continued to push forward with his relationship with Gypsy. Viewers also finally discovered that her real name is Cynthia.

The “Elongated Man” made his debut.

We finally got a great team up scene this season between Team Flash, Elongated man, and Breacher. The action has been very sparse this season and although I do prefer the show having more action, it’s a quality versus quantity situation. I would rather have more engaging and memorable intense scenes than lower budget action scenes that are there just to look cool. I also cannot wait to see the return of Breacher this season. Danny Trejo gave a great performance as the character, and he was definitely one of the more interesting antiheroes that the show has introduced since season one.

Overall, I think this might be the best episode of The Flash this season. It had a surprising cast of new characters, less drama, and best of all, more detective work. The show is slowly transitioning back to its original roots. The Flash was always a detective sci-fi show with a mix of romance drama. It will definitely be a positive outcome for both writers and fans if they continue to take the path they are on. I would have never expected that an episode about a forgotten hero from the Golden age would actually be featured on The Flash!

PREDICTIONS

Barry finally got some insight into who he will be fighting this season from Ralph. It’s safe to say the search for Devoe will begin before the “Crisis on Earth X” crossover begins.
