Chapman Deal Will Prove Bad for Yanks
January 4, 2017
The MLB Winter Meetings are one of the most exciting times of the year for us baseball fans. The Winter Meetings are when all 30 teams meet in one place to discuss trades, contracts, and other transactions involving current players and free agents. Many teams made spectacular moves during these meetings, but one of the more intriguing moves was the Yankees signing closer Aroldis Chapman, whom they had just traded away in July. In a sense it was a good move since they were able to get a few prospects from the Cubs for basically a 3-month rental of Chapman. But the negative sides of the trades were much clearer. First, the amount of money they paid for him is absurd. The contract was a 5-year contract worth 86 million dollars. This means the Yankees are paying a guy 15 million dollars a year to pitch around 60 innings, which is about 100 innings less than an average starting pitcher is capable of. Another reason why this is a bad deal for the Yankees is because of the upcoming free agent class. The 2018 class consists of superstar players such as Manny Machado and Bryce Harper. Both of these players can get deals in the 350-400 million dollar range and now the Yankees will be handcuffed if they plan on making multiple signings next offseason. They will be forced to spend less to prevent going over the salary cap and paying a big fee in luxury tax. Overall the negatives outweigh the positives of the Yankees signing of Chapman but it proves that the Yankees are still all in to make the postseason even if they aren’t expected to do so.
