Talking Dead with Pedro (7.4)

Pedro Vasquez, Staff Writer

This week viewers were treated to a super-sized 90-minute episode of The Walking Dead. A couple of days after Negan took away two beloved characters from the TWD family, Negan and his group of Saviors arrived at Alexandria earlier than expected and took whatever they wanted to take!

The show kicked off with Michonne rising early for sniper rifle practice—a departure from her trusted sword. She found her practice spot and an abandoned car, and waited patiently until a walker came lurking for its next victim. Michonne clocked up her sniper rifle and began shooting at the zombie missing each time for a total of 9 misses! Frustrated, Michonne pulled out her trusted sword, and with one swoosh turned the zombie into a sliced jelly donut. What many don’t know is that in the comic series, a character named Andrea (who was killed off earlier in the series) was the main sniper of the group.  Sasha took over this role, and now Michonne is trying to strengthen herself with other weapons in her arsenal. An Easter egg that can be drawn is that Michonne is preparing herself for the “All Out War” between Negan and Rick which was a memorable moment in the comics.

Throughout the entire episode, Negan made Rick carry his bat, Lucille, as Rick gives Negan a tour of Alexandria. Rick holds back much anger and rage in using Lucille against him because that weapon turned his friends into a bowl of spaghetti with extra red sauce. Additionally, if Rick kills Negan, they all die at the hands of Negan’s soldiers! It’s kind of like when you’re hanging out with your girlfriend and she says, “Hold my very expensive purse please!” In that case, you could say no, but that will just anger your girlfriend.  Rick didn’t have a choice—he was ordered to hold Lucille, and he did as he was told to do.

Negan and his group of Saviors raided every single house in Alexandria and took what they wanted to take. They took weapons, mattresses, furniture, but left food for survival. In doing so, the Saviors bullied and tormented the people of Alexandria to see what they would do to stop them from doing their job. Some passed the test, but Rick’s son, Carl, did not. When the Saviors raided Rick’s home, Carl believed they were taking too much, so he pulled out his gun, and shot the ground to get their attention. The shot got the attention of Rick and Negan, but that didn’t stop Negan and his army from taking what they wanted and felt was enough.

Throughout this episode, the viewers saw the return of Daryl! The viewers were led to  believe that he could stay in Alexandria, but he was able to walk with Negan and help take whatever he wanted to take. Rick tried to talk to Daryl at one point, but Negan stopped him and told him that he was not allowed to speak to Daryl unless he wants to chop off one of his body parts. Daryl refused to speak to Negan and remains quiet and non-cooperative as he did in last week’s episode—this act didn’t help Daryl. The only way Daryl can go back is if Rick can supply better things for Negan.

A character on the show by the name of Father Gabriel (a priest) finally made himself useful for the group now that he no longer is a pacifist. When Negan asked for Maggie, Father Gabriel came out of nowhere thinking quickly on his feet asked, “Would you like to pay your condolences?” This was brilliant because Maggie was really at The Hilltop to see if she could still have her baby. In doing so, Father Gabriel made Negan believe that Maggie killed herself after seeing her husband being killed in front of her by Negan. Father Gabriel finally had faith in Rick—ever since Father Gabriel met Rick, he never really trusted Rick because he killed many enemies in his church at the time. It’s good to see someone having faith in our beloved leader!

As Negan and his men were cleaning out the armory, one of Negan’s top workers found a notebook detailing Alexandria’s gun inventory. As the worker searched through the notebook, she noticed two guns missing, which upset Negan very, very much! The viewers complained about the same thing, “It’s just two guns, you just wiped out their entire arsenal! CALM DOWN!” Negan made Rick search the entire community for those two guns while he held the person in charge of the arsenal, Olivia, hostage threatening to possibly kill her if the guns weren’t found and turned in to Negan’s army! Luckily, Rick found the two guns in Spencer’s home.

Once Spencer returned with Rosita from searching for Daryl’s motorcycle, Rick confronted him and told him what had happened. Spencer’s response was that Alexandria had those guns ever since Rick took charge in case anything went wrong. Spencer despises Rick and his leadership, and Rick has known about this for a while now.  Spencer angered Rick when Spencer blamed Rick for the deaths of Abraham and Glenn.

In this 90-minute episode we got to see what The Saviors were made of and a lot of highlights. For example, Rick calls a meeting at the church to tell the entire community that he is no longer in charge, and Negan is! Rick had an emotional conversation with Michonne, and made her give up her sniper rifle to the Saviors because he doesn’t want to lose anyone else—like his daughter that isn’t his! In season 1, while Rick was in a coma, his best friend at the time, Shane, had an affair with Rick’s wife, Lori, who is now dead. Lori had a baby, Judith, and we learn in this episode that Shane is the dad. Carl killed Shane after he turns into a walker. This episode had surprise after surprise coming at us, and so far I think this has to be one of my favorite episodes of all time! Tune in next week where we can see Maggie again, but this time at the Hilltop, and hopefully, her baby is healthy plus an ambush by The Saviors at The Hilltop! Have a wonderful week Freehold Patriots, and whatever you do, do not mess with Rick and his people! Ta-ta!
