Field trips are some of everyone’s favorite parts of school – well, at least they were back in elementary school and middle school. Now in high school, students rarely have the opportunity to go on a class field trip. Luckily enough, two sophomore classes from Freehold Township got to travel to New York City to watch The Crucible on Broadway, which Mrs. Richardson planned for her two Honors English II classes.

This trip took place on Friday the 13th, which makes it seem as though something could have gone wrong or the trip had been unlucky, but that wasn’t the case at all. The whole trip was an amazing experience for both the students and the teachers that attended as chaperons (Mrs. Richardson, Ms. Galinski, Mrs. Price and Mr. Giblin).

At the end of the school day, students reported to Mrs. Richardson’s room to wait for the bus. Fortunately, the classes weren’t crammed on a school bus but rather a very nice mini coach bus that left the school around 3:15 and unexpectedly, didn’t arrive until 6:10 due to bad traffic. Students were hungry and beginning to get antsy from being on the bus for so long.

When they arrived, they went to go eat at the Heartland Brewery in the Empire State Building. Everyone had soon forgotten how uncomfortable and impatient they just were a few moments ago because the food was delicious. The appetizers were classic caesar salad and chicken spring rolls. The choices for an entree were rotisserie chicken, mac and cheese and penne pasta. For sides, the tables were given french fries and jasmine rice. Finally, for dessert, each table was given a platter of some tasty cookies and brownies.

FTHS Sophomores brave the weather (and the date!) to visit Broadway

The weather, thankfully, wasn’t as bad as some had anticipated. At times, there was a slight drizzle, but for most of the time, the weather wasn’t an issue. Even though many came prepared with umbrellas, they were unnecessary since the rain held up for the classes to enjoy their walk in the city.

After dinner, the classes made it just in time to the Walter Kerr Theatre on West 48th Street, a beautiful theatre which doesn’t have a bad seat in the house. The classes sat up in the balcony but still had a great view of the entire three-hour performance.

The two classes had read The Crucible and everyone had their own visions in their mind of what to expect, but no one could have expected the performance that was in store for them that Friday night.

The show was rather punny, meaning filled with puns, and made the audience laugh multiple times. The cast played their roles spot-on and truly fulfilled their characters. Even though all the students had read the play, the cast was still able to have them on the edge of their seats anticipating what would happen.

When the show was over, sophomore Maddison Stein said, “The show was a lot of fun!” By that time, it was already 10:50 and everyone started to feel pretty exhausted. The bus ride home was not only much quicker, but much quieter since many students fell asleep. Everyone arrived back at the school at 12:30 and walked to their parent’s cars, beyond excited to go home and sleep in their beds after their long, eventful day.

Sophomore Lindsey Golotko said, “The Crucible was an amazing experience. The play was recreated in a way that was so unique and nothing like I could ever have imagined. The acting was phenomenal and the food was great, too. I’m so grateful that I was able to go on the trip. Oh, and thank you Mrs. Richardson for organizing everything!”

The whole trip was a delightful experience for everyone who attended. It was a field trip to be both cherished and much appreciated.
