Fashion Trend Friday: Groutfits

Noah Gomes, Staff Writer

When I first heard the term groutfit I though about the construction material grout. Which is very wrong.

Groutfit is a term which combines the words grey and outfit. That hints at what a groutfit is, which is an outfit made up of entirely grey. This means grey shoes, grey shirt, grey pants, probably even grey underwear.

Most people think that the color grey is bland and boring, but to be completely honest, I love wearing the color grey. With that being said, I wouldn’t wear a groutfit unless maybe the shades of grey differed. Otherwise, I think that they bleed too closely into boringness. Which seems to be agreed on by junior Jenna Palmer, who says “groutfits are good as long as your grays aren’t exactly the same, because then it looks silly.”

Although there is an extreme lack of color, things such as cuts, fits, and layers can alter groutfits into something more trendy, which is probably why there is such an affinity towards them.

You gotta admit-- he kinda does look comfy....
You gotta admit– he kinda does look comfy….

That along with the fact that people think they look comfortable, which Mary Purcell, a junior, explains when she told me, “Groufits are meant for the type of people who have the confidence to pull them off. Honestly, groutfits look so comfortable so if you wanna wear one go for it; I’m probably jealous that you’re rocking the sweats and I’m in jeans.”

Starr Mckenna, another junior, said something similar with, “I like groutfits because they look comfortable and they fit the look. Anytime I wear a groutfit, it’s when I’m bumming.”

I believe that fashion and the clothes you choose to wear are important; they’re obvious ways to express yourself.

In Divergent, the Abnegation wear, well, groutfits so they don’t express themselves too much because they were essentially against individuality. With trends such as groutfits and that weird beige color Kanye loves to sell, the expression of color, image and pattern is sometimes taken away and leaves a blob of normal.

That being said, from time to time a good groutfit can create a good look; it’s when it comes down to the frequency of groutfit use when it becomes bland.

Fun little tidbit: I once said “I like your groutfit” to someone. They seemed happy when I started saying “I like your…” And that was very quickly replaced with slight anger and irritation when I said “groutfit.” So maybe don’t say that to people.
