Contestant Profile: JONATHAN (JONNY) KANDELL

Why do you want to be Mr. FTHS?

I want to be in Mr. FTHS because I already won homecoming king, so if I get this AND prom king then I win the triple crown like American Pharaoh. Really though, I’m not doing it just for the title, I want to meet new people and bond with them throughout the competition and give people a great show.

What does Freehold Township HS mean to you?

Freehold Township is my second home. I’m super involved with the school; I take every opportunity I get to make Township a better place. Township has given me a lot and I think participating in this school event is a fun way to give back… by superficially flaunting my body to the community.

What clubs/activities/hobbies are you involved with at FTHS or outside of FTHS?

I’m the President of the National Honor Society, Editor for the school newspaper, member of the Student Government Executive Board, founder of the Cookies For A Cause Charity and I work as a Game Master at the fabulous Amazing Escape Room in Freehold, where you and your friends can get locked in a room and try to escape in less than an hour. It’s a lot of fun so definitely come down and try it!

How would you describe yourself?

I don’t mean to brag, but the New York Times calls me “… a genius inside and outside of the classroom, witty, funny, a bit of a flirt, and does not know when too many calories are enough calories”… so yeah. Plus I’m a Sagittarius, so if that doesn’t say it all then I don’t know what will.

Being Mr. FTHS is a huge honor.  Why do you think you have what it takes to be Mr. FTHS?

I recently took a quiz on Buzzfeed, and was told I had the abs of Channing Tatum, the quads of Ronda Rousey, the legs of Stuart Little, the mouth of Barbara Walters, and the eyes of a determined cashier. Clearly, I’m the total package. I think we both know that I have what it takes to be Mr. FTHS.

Who is your favorite person and why?

My favorite person in the entire universe is Kerry Washington’s character Olivia Pope on NBC’s Scandal. I know it’s literally a show for forty year old wine moms but I love it and I need it. If Olivia Pope punched me in the face I would thank her.

What do you love most about FTHS?

I love a lot of things about Freehold Township High School, but I think the relationship between teachers and students is what I appreciate most. I’m involved in a lot of clubs and activities at school, and because of that I get to bond with teachers who genuinely like me and want me to succeed. Mutual respect is something Township prides itself on, and I definitely find it to be here at school.

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

I know I’ve been joking throughout this entire questionnaire, but this is the most serious answer I could give. Realistically, and I haven’t told anybody this before, ten years from now I honestly and wholeheartedly see myself as an 80 year old woman. Good question.

Describe your ideal date.

My ideal date would be a picnic in a hot air balloon. Actually, I really just want any excuse to go in a hot air balloon, so I guess we don’t have to have a picnic. Just a hot air balloon. Literally ANY situation that involves me in a hot air balloon is the perfect date. I’m actually super okay if she stays on the ground and watches me go by myself. Remember Moody’s Point from The Amanda Show… iconic. I guess I just really want to go up in a hot air balloon?

What is your passion in life?

My passion in life is to be happy, which is a totally basic and cliche thing to say, plus it sounds like it belongs on a tumblr blog, but I can’t help it! I don’t just want satisfaction, I want action (which kind of rhymes so that means it’s a good quote). My life should be filled to the brim with excitement and intrigue. I want to challenge myself each and every day, making myself and the people around me better and better.
