**EDITOR’S NOTE: POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD**
Yet another epic installment to the Star Wars saga has premiered, and yet again, the light and dark side meet to see which force will reign over the universe.
The story picks up thirty years after the Galactic Empire, led by the evil Sith Lord, Darth Vader, was defeated. Since then, another evil force, the First Order, has tried to gain control of the galaxy and destroy the race of Jedi Knights. The First Order is led by Kylo Rhen, the dark side’s new prodige. Although this story may seem sold out, the acting and atmosphere portrayed is endearing. Rhen continues on the legacy of Darth Vader, which the filmmakers incorporate into the movie nicely. I missed the cunningness of Darth Vader, but the same evil presence is embodied in Rhen.
To the rebellion’s dismay, the last of the Jedi Knights, Luke Skywalker, has gone missing with no trace known to the public. I was disappointed that Skywalker was not physically in the movie the majority of the time was frustrating but it ultimately added to the dramaticness of the story. Along with making references to Skywalker, old characters such as CP3O, R2D2, and Princess (now General) Leia make an appearance. This pleased me because it tied the Episodes together and brought back nostalgia. Seeing my favorite characters from childhood provoked a deep connection from me to the movies and I loved it more because of that.
Furthermore, early into the story it is discovered that a piece to a map that can be used to track down Skywalker becomes in the possession of a drone, BB8. Lost, this drone finds itself embraced by a fierce scavenger, Rey. This new face channels the light side in this episode and to me, gave a fresh appeal to using the force. Her strong spirit reminded me of Amidala and Leia, which made it easy for me to admire her. Later, Rey and her drone embark on a journey, along with Finn, a defect Stormtrooper, to place the map into the right hands. The use of a former Stormtrooper in this saga created dynamic relationships and complicated the plot, which I like because it portrays that there can be a gray area between good and evil. I felt with his struggle of defying the status quo and doing the right thing, which truly
As the story unfolds, the trio gains unexpected guests, Han Solo and Chewbacca, legends from the second power struggle between the light and dark side thirty years prior. Seeing these two iconic characters completed the movie; the use of transitions and dialogue similar to the previous movies brought a sense of unity between the saga, too, which I adored. Once the plot thickened with the new addition to the team, new enemies were revealed and alliances were created. Most of these relationships were formed within the last thirty years, and it is interesting to see the whereabouts of the former stars of these movies.
To summarize, heroics, loss, and betrayal lead to an unforgettable addition to a saga that will live with us forever. Check out your local movie theaters for the next showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Episode VII, a phenomenal movie well worth seeing more than once.
And may the odds be ever in your favor- Oh wait, wrong movie. May the Force be with you.
