Week 8 of College Football is done, and let’s just say this might have been the craziest week yet. 11 teams entered Week 8 undefeated, and now only six remain. Let’s get started.
The Miami Hurricanes kicked off Week 8 against the Louisville Cardinals, who came out the gate early with 2 touchdowns in the first quarter. The Louisville defense was all over star QB Carson Beck, intercepting him four times in the game. Wide receiver Chris Bell had the standout game for Louisville with 9 receptions, 136 yards and 2 Touchdowns. Louisville wound up beating Miami 24-21 to hand the Canes their first loss of the season.
Next, Minnesota wound up crushing #25 Nebraska 24-6 to cap off an exciting Friday Night of College Football.
On Saturday, the madness continued. First, a few top teams took care of business. #1 Ohio State shut out Wisconsin 34-0, #3 Indiana beat Michigan State in the Old Brass Spittoon, 38-13, and #4 Texas A&M held on to defeat Arkansas 45-42. The three of those teams remain undefeated.
Then, #9 Georgia beat #5 Ole Miss with a final score 43-35, handing Ole Miss their first loss of the season. Georgia Quarterback Gunner Stockton had a legendary game throwing for 289 yards and four touchdowns and running for 59 yards and one more touchdown. He paved the way for the Bulldogs to jump up the National rankings.
#6 Alabama continued their reign of terror over the SEC, winning their fourth conference game to improve their record in their division to 4-0, and their overall record to 6-1. Alabama beat #11 Tennessee, 37-20. The Alabama defense was the real difference maker in the game, with four sacks, eight tackles for a loss, and a touchdown.
You could say the biggest upset of the day came when Arizona State took down #7 Texas Tech 26-22, handing them their first loss. QB Sam Leavitt had a strong day for the Sun Devils, with 319 passing yards and a touchdown, leading the way for Arizona State to get a huge victory. Arizona State is now ranked #24 in the Country after their upset win.
#8 Oregon took care of business against Rutgers, winning 56-10.
#12 Georgia Tech defeated ACC rival Duke, 27-18. They are 7-0 for the first time since 1966.
#24 Cincinnati beat Oklahoma State, 49-17. The Bearcats will play in their first bowl game since a 2022 Fenway Bowl loss to Louisville.
#21 Texas got an overtime victory against Kentucky, 16-13.
#19 South Florida beat up on FAU, 48-13.
#18 Virginia came back to beat Washington State, 22-20. The Cavaliers are going bowling for the first time since a 2019 Orange Bowl loss to Florida.
#16 Missouri took down Auburn, 23-17.
#14 Oklahoma got a 26-7 win against South Carolina.
A big game between two ranked opponents, #13 Notre Dame secured a victory against #20 USC. Multiple Notre Dame players shined in this one including their Quarterback CJ Carr, but their biggest star was running back Jeremiyah Love, who ran for 228 yards and a touchdown.
#17 Vanderbilt got a huge victory against #10 LSU, winning 31-24. Vanderbilt had a strong week on the ground, picking up three rushing touchdowns and 239 yards from 6 combined running backs.
#15 BYU continued their win streak as they picked up a win to improve to 7-0. This time they beat #23 Utah in the Holy War. BYU’s defense was strong, forcing a fumble, getting 3 sacks, an interception and 8 tackles for a loss.
Michigan hops back into the AP Top 25 after their 24-7 victory against Washington.
#22 Memphis fell at the hands of Alex Mortensen’s UAB Blazers, 31-24.
Through right weeks, the undefeated teams of College Football are Ohio State, BYU, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Texas A&M, and unranked Navy.
In coaching news, Florida fired their head coach Billy Napier after their 3-4 start to the season. Napier compiled a 22-23 record over nearly four seasons as Gators head coach and was booed the entire game at the Swamp. Wide Receivers Coach Billy Gonzales has been named interim head coach.
Colorado State fired head coach Jay Norvell after a loss to Hawaii left them 2-5. Norvell went 18-26 over roughly four seasons with the Rams. Defensive Coordinator Tyson Summers has been named interim head coach.
Note that these rankings were at the time of the games and have changed ahead of Week 9. Those hopping into the rankings are the now-ranked #19 Louisville, #23 Illinois, #24 Arizona State and #25 Michigan. The teams that have dropped from the rankings are USC, Memphis, Nebraska and Utah.
A couple of big games to watch next week will be #8 Ole Miss vs #13 Oklahoma, #15 Missouri vs #10 Vanderbilt, and #3 Texas A&M vs #20 LSU.
