Welcome back to this week’s edition of the NFL weekly recap! This week, we saw head coaching drama, postgame drama, primetime stunners, and more field goal daggers. What exactly is all of this “Drama”, one may ask? Well, read and find out!
Titans fire head coach Brian Callahan after 1-5 start, 20-10 road loss to Raiders
Tennessee became the first team to fire a head coach this season; Callahan had a 4-19 record at the time of his firing. In his final game, QB Cam Ward completed 26 of 38 passes for 222 yards, a touchdown, an interception, and two fumbles lost. Ward was sacked six times for 62 yards. Senior offensive assistant Mike McCoy has been named interim head coach. McCoy was the head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 2013 to 2016.
Eagles continue to struggle by falling to injury-riddled Giants on the road on Thursday Night Football, 34-17
Even with the absences of WRs Malik Nabers (season) and Darius Slayton, Giants QB Jaxson Dart continued to impress against the league’s best teams, by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 34-17 at MetLife Stadium on Thursday Night Football. Dart went 17/25 for 195 yards and a touchdown through the air, and rushed 13 times for 58 yards and another TD. And how about rookie RB Cam Skattebo? Skattebo recorded three TDs on the ground on 19 carries for 98 yards. The defending champs find themselves in a rough spot after losing two games in a row.
Fields gets sacked nine times in London as Jets fall to Broncos, 13-11, drop to 0-6
A defensive showdown in London saw the Denver Broncos rack up nine sacks on Jets QB Justin Fields, as both offenses could not get the ball rolling. The game’s only touchdown came at the end of the first quarter on a Bo Nix 16-yard pass to fullback Nate Adkins for a Broncos touchdown, giving them a 10-6 lead. The Jets ended up kicking three field goals and got a safety after Broncos lineman Quinn Meinerz committed an end zone holding penalty in the third quarter. On New York’s final drive, Denver turned the Jets over on downs, putting a 13-11 victory in their cooler. When will Aaron Glenn win his first game?
Panthers kick game-winning field goal to defeat Cowboys at home, 30-27
In a game that was kept within one possession all day, the Panthers found themselves tied with the Cowboys at 27 late in the fourth quarter. Following one punt drive for each team, Carolina drove all the way down to the Dallas 12-yard line, and took some knees to set up a game-winning 33-yard field goal with rookie kicker Ryan Fitzgerald. RB Rico Dowdle continued to make his case for Carolina RB1, by rushing for 183 yards on 30 carries, and catching four passes for 56 yards and a score in the 30-27 win. This was Carolina’s first win over Dallas since 2018.
Chargers kick late field goal to defeat Dolphins on the road, 29-27
Down 26-13 early in the fourth quarter, the Dolphins rallied to score 14 unanswered points and take a 27-26 lead. They responded to Miami’s final touchdown drive with a 33-yard Cameron Dicker field goal that put Los Angeles up 29-27 with 0:05 on the clock. Derwin James’s interception of Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa clinched the Charger victory on the sole play of the final drive; Tagovailoa threw three interceptions in the game. RB Kimani Vidal stepped up in the Chargers’ depleted backfield, rushing 18 times for 124 yards, and catching a TD pass.
Patriots offense, Maye catch fire in 25-19 rout of Saints on the road
QB Drake Maye turned into a cannon at the Superdome, going 18/26 for 261 yards and three touchdowns passing. WR Kayshon Boutte caught two touchdown passes from Maye. A forced fumble and recovery + a forced punt during New Orleans’ late fourth quarter drives let the Pats leave NOLA with a 25-19 road win. This was New England’s first win over the Saints since 2017, when Brady and Brees were still in the league.
Chiefs defeat Lions at Arrowhead on Sunday Night Football, 30-17; Branch suspended one game for postgame misconduct
It was a week 1 wash, rinse, repeat for the Motor City, as they lost another crucial road game to the Chiefs, 30-17, on Sunday Night Football. The offense wouldn’t get up off the couch; not Amon-Ra St. Brown, not Jameson Williams, not Jared Goff, nor the ‘Sonic & Knuckles’ backfield. On the flip side, Patrick Mahomes went 22/30 for 257 yards and three touchdowns through the air. Mahomes also rushed for another touchdown. Are the 3-3 Chiefs back on their feet?
During postgame, Lions safety Brian Branch was suspended one game for a postgame altercation involving himself and JuJu Smith-Schuster, among other players. This marks the Alabama alum’s 14th fine since playing his first game in September of 2023 (Which was also against the Chiefs).
Falcons, Bears rack up shocking Monday Night Football wins
The Atlanta Falcons were one of two underdogs to pull off a stunning victory on Monday Night Football. They defeated the Buffalo Bills, 24-14 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, handing Buffalo their second consecutive loss. QB Michael Penix, Jr. went 2032 for 250 yards and a touchdown. RB Bijan Robinson and WR Drake London went wild on offense; Robinson rushed 19 times for 170 yards and a touchdown, while London hauled in 10 passes for 158 yards and a TD. Bills QB Josh Allen threw two interceptions, as Atlanta defeated Buffalo for the first time since 2013.
The Chicago Bears also stepped up on Monday Night Football in an exciting 25-24 win over the Washington Commanders. In a hard-fought matchup, the Bears recovered a fumble off Commanders QB Jayden Daniels down 24-22 with 3:10 remaining. Chicago used the ensuing drive to kick a 38-yard field goal as time expired with new acquisition Jake Moody, after Cairo Santos was ruled out with an injury. RB D’Andre Swift ran for 108 yards on 14 carries.
Other scores and headlines!
- Seahawks 20, Jaguars 12 – A huge “What could’ve been” day for the Jacksonville offense, as they failed to convert on a PAT in the first quarter up 6-0, and on a two-point run conversion down 20-12 in the fourth quarter. Seahawks WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba was the game’s standout player, recording 8 receptions for 162 yards and a touchdown.
- Rams 17, Ravens 3 – A low-scoring but big defensive day for the Los Angeles Rams, as they travelled to M&T Bank Stadium to drop the Baltimore Ravens to 1-5. The Rams defense recorded three turnovers, and forced Baltimore to put QB Tyler Huntley in for Cooper Rush, who had gone 11/19 for 72 yards and an interception prior to his benching. However, a misfortunate first half that saw star WR Puka Nacua suffer an injury raised concerns for Los Angeles. Nacua has been ruled out for next week’s game in London.
- Cardinals 27, Colts 31 – The Cardinals, without Kyler Murray due to injury, still put up a solid fight with Jacoby Brissett in their road loss to the Colts. A 1-yard touchdown run from RB Jonathan Taylor set up the go-ahead touchdown for Indianapolis, as they turned Arizona over on downs on their final drive.
- Browns 9, Steelers 23 – The Pittsburgh Steelers dominated their AFC North rivals, the Cleveland Browns, 23-9 at AcriSure Stadium. QB Aaron Rodgers threw 21/30 for 235 yards and two touchdowns, dropping Browns rookie Dillon Gabriel to 0-2 as an NFL starting QB.
- 49ers 19, Buccaneers 30 – The injury-riddled magic ran out of steam for the San Francisco 49ers, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers walked away with a 30-19 victory at home. QB Baker Mayfield recorded a stat line of 17/23 for 256 yards and two passing TDs. 49ers QB Mac Jones threw two interceptions.
- Bengals 18, Packers 27 – Green Bay held off the Joe Flacco-led Bengals at Lambeau field, 27-18. QB Jordan Love went 19/26 for 259 yards passing, a touchdown, and an interception. RB Josh Jacobs rushed for two touchdowns on 18 carries for 93 yards. Despite the loss, can the Bengals breathe a sigh of relief after moving on from Jake Browning?
