Welcome back! During week 3 of the NFL season, we saw some surprise super sub performances, plenty of upsets, special teams’ frenzies, and a few teams being exposed! Time to get up to speed on the latest news, eh? Let’s do it!
Bills stun division rival Dolphins at home on Thursday Night Football, 31-21
Miami’s streak of failing to beat the Bills in Buffalo since 2016 lives on, despite keeping it close the entire game. Bills QB Josh Allen went 22/28 for 213 yards and three touchdowns, and RB James Cook rushed for 108 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. The 0-3 Dolphins are hungry for an MNF win at home vs. the Jets next week.
Browns defense and special teams have a day while upsetting Packers, 13-10
Packers QB Jordan Love threw an interception with 3:18 remaining in the game, setting up a game-tying one-play touchdown drive. The Cleveland special teams blocked a 43-yard attempt from Packers kicker Brandon McManus and recovered the ball at the Cleveland 47-yard line. Five plays later, Browns kicker Andre Szmyt kicked the game-winning 55-yard field goal to give Cleveland its first win of the season. This was Cleveland’s first victory vs. Green Bay since 2005, and its first at home since 1995.
Buccaneers come back from late blocked field goal to beat Justin Fields-less Jets, 29-27
The Jets blocked a 43-yard field goal attempt from Buccaneers kicker Chase McLaughlin and returned it for a touchdown with 1:49 remaining. However, the Bucs used the remaining time on the clock to drive down the field and kick a game-winning 36-yard field goal with McLaughlin. Gang Green looks for a win in Miami next Monday Night.
Marcus Mariota and the Commanders offense drop 41 points in Jayden Daniels’s absence, beat Raiders 41-21
Raiders WR Tre Tucker’s eight reception, 145-yard, three-touchdown performance was overshadowed by Washington’s triumph over the Raiders in Landover. Washington punt returner Jaylin Lane returned five punts for 127 yards and a touchdown. And look at how fast RB Jeremy McNichols is, with a 60-yard TD to show for it! Mariota went 15/21 for 207 yards and a touchdown.
Eagles cover spread late after returning blocked field goal for TD as time expired, defeating the Rams, 33-26
Down 26-7 at the start of the third quarter, the Eagles rallied from a 19-point deficit to take the lead with 1:48 remaining, as QB Jalen Hurts threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to WR Devonta Smith (The two-point conversion was no good). Rams kicker Joshua Karty, who had a kick blocked from 36 yards earlier, attempted a 44-yard walk-off field goal. Suddenly, Philly DT Jordan Davis blocked the kick and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown. With that touchdown, the Eagles prevented the Rams from covering a 3.5-point spread. Hurts threw 21/32 for 226 yards and three touchdowns.
Carson Wentz, Vikings offense scores 48 points without JJ McCarthy as they destroy the Bengals, 48-10
Vikings RB Jordan Mason rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, and QB Carson Wentz went 14/20 for 173 yards and two touchdowns in preparation for their matchup in Ireland next week vs. Pittsburgh. Bengals QB Jake Browning threw for only 140 yards on 19/27 and two interceptions. Is it time to stick a fork in Cincinnati?
Chargers kick field goal to win 23-20 against rival Broncos at home, but lose Harris for season with knee injury
Los Angeles’s defensive-minded fourth quarter saw them allow one field goal and force two punts on Denver’s fourth-quarter drives. On the game’s final drive, Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense set up a game-winning 43-yard field goal from Cameron Dicker. The Chargers started off 3-0 against division opponents, and 3-0 overall for the first time since 2002. Unfortunately, Chargers RB Najee Harris suffered a non-contact Achilles injury, ending his season. Harris signed a one-year, $9.5 million contract this offseason after four years in Pittsburgh.
Bears defeat Cowboys at Soldier Field, 31-14, in Matt Eberflus homecoming
Caleb Williams threw 19/28 for 298 yards and four touchdowns in a career-best performance, giving Ben Johnson his first win as an NFL head coach. Cowboys QB Dak Prescott was benched in the second half after throwing two interceptions. Dallas DC Matt Eberflus returned to Chicago for the first time since being fired. Maybe Caleb will be Chicago’s first 4k yard passer?
Brock Purdy and George Kittle-less 49ers win again by kicking late field goal to beat rival Cardinals, 16-15
The 49ers forced the Cardinals to punt on three of their four fourth-quarter drives. San Francisco kicker Eddy Piñeiro kicked the game-winning 36-yard field goal to elevate Mac Jones’s record to 2-0 as the Niners’ starting QB. In other news, Arizona RB James Conner suffered a season-ending injury to his ankle.
Chiefs go on the road to beat the Giants 22-9 on Sunday Night Football; Wilson gets benched for rookie Jaxson Dart
Giants QB Russell Wilson’s 18/32, 160-yard, two-interception performance was enough to throw first-round pick Jaxson Dart into the spotlight for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, the Chiefs recorded their first win of the season. WR Tyquan Thornton stepped up in Xavier Worthy’s absence, catching five passes for 71 yards and a touchdown.
Lions back in business on Monday Night Football as they beat the Ravens on the road, 38-30
Everything that could go wrong for the Ravens did; despite QB Lamar Jackson throwing three touchdowns with TE Mark Andrews catching two of those, RB Derrick Henry fumbled the ball with 8:31 remaining, setting up a Lions field goal drive that put them up 31-24. Detroit followed up by forcing a punt and scoring another TD, extending the lead to 38-24. While the Ravens scored another touchdown the next drive, the two-point conversion failed, and they failed to secure the onside kick. Detroit’s “Sonic & Knuckles” duo combined for four touchdowns and 218 yards on the ground.
