On Monday, May 5th, President Trump declared two new national holidays. These new holidays will celebrate the end of World War I and World War II, to be held on November 11th and May 8th. President Trump expressed his view on celebrating the victories of the U.S. military. On Truth Social, Trump wrote, “We won two world wars, but we never took credit for it – Everyone else does! All over the world, Allies are celebrating the victory we had in World War II. The only country that doesn’t celebrate is the United States of America, and the victory was only accomplished because of us.”
The New Holidays mark the days when the Armistice was signed, November 11, 1918, and the victory date of World War II, May 8th, 1945. Trump also stated that “for these two very important holidays,” the country will not be closing because “we already have too many holidays in America – There are not enough days left in the year.” November 11 is already celebrated as a national holiday, Veterans Day.
Trump expressed that he wants to change what we call ‘Veterans Day’ to ‘Victory Day for World War I Day.’ The opinion on this is varied amongst US veterans who may feel slighted by the change. After some reaction, White House Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified this, saying that they are not renaming Veterans Day but adding another proclamation for November 11th.
