On Apr 28, 2025 popular language website, Duolingo made a controversial announcement. They declared they are now an “AI first” company and began to fire 10% of there workers. They have also announced that AI helped to make 150 new language courses.
So why is this bad? It’s bad because Duolingo has been built on teaching the most human thing, language. The use of AI has gone against what this company was built off of by firing a major chunk of there employees.
The backlash has also created a shift among their users. Many users joined because of the TikTok videos Duolingo posted and memes associated with the company. However, this may not be able to last for long because many users are dealing with the app after the announcement.
