Many around the world are mourning the recent death of Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday, April 21. Sadly, he suffered a stroke followed by heart failure after a long battle with double pneumonia. He had a history of respiratory issues and even had part of his lung removed at the age of 21. Despite this, he lived to the golden age of 88.
As a sovereign pontiff, Pope Francis was the head of the Roman Catholic Church for more than 12 years. Because of this, he was an important figure and leader. Throughout his life, Pope Francis was known for being a humble and simple person. He focused largely on the poor, oppressed, and underrepresented people. He has advocated for immigrants, climate change, and peace, especially for the wars in Ukraine, Israel, Palestine, and Myanmar. Pope Francis heavily emphasized reform in the Church to become more accepting and open while also forming bonds with leaders of other religions.
“Where there is no humility, there is war, there is discord, there is division.” -Pope Francis.
Pope Francis was the first Pope of Latin American origin. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after his parents immigrated from Italy to escape the dictatorship of Mussolini. Before choosing his papal name as pope in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, his birth name was Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He was the oldest of 5 children. From a young age, he was inspired to be a priest. He joined the Jesuit order, also known as the Society of Jesus, at 21, making him the first Jesuit pope.
As a personal preference, Pope Francis will be buried at the Basilica of Saint Mary instead of at the Vatican. This request reflects his humble and simple nature. His legacy as a symbol of humility and love for the poor will always be remembered.
