Guess who’s back? Yes, it’s Fortnite. Over these past few weeks, you have probably been hearing a lot once more about this game we all know the name of. This is all thanks to the absolutely insane run Fortnite has been on these past few months. Last year, I wrote an article very similar to this one. And within it, I discussed how Fortnite came back into all of our lives with Fortnite OG and Chapter 5. Now, almost exactly one year after the Big Bang, Fortnite is in an even stronger place than last year. But, HOW? To continue the absolutely insane story from last year, let’s start where I left off; the beginning of Chapter 5.
Of course, you all know what happened. Chapter One was destroyed once more in the Big Bang live event, launching the Metaverse and Chapter 5. But, although I dipped into it a tad last time, let’s actually talk about Fortnite Chapter 5. Chapter 5 is one of my personal favorite chapters, although it was NOT loved by the community. Let’s talk a little bit about the seasons.
Chapter 5:
Chapter 5 launched with Chapter 5 Season 1 – Underground. This was actually one of the most beloved seasons of the chapter. The Chapter 5 Island “Helios” was absolutely beautiful, and by far one of my favorite maps. This season also introduced Hope, a new storyline character who stayed through the entire chapter. With her is everyone’s favorite, Agent Jones. Besides all the positives, this season definitely was a bit underwhelming, with the disappointing Winterfest map and bullet drop, a new way of gunplay that did not go over well with the community. Let’s see about season two, shall we?
Chapter 5 Season 2 – Myths & Mortals was the season we were in when I wrote last time. Season 2 was another good one, but was much more plagued with issues than last season. Hope and Jones returned, and we witnessed beautiful mini live events as the storyline of Pandora’s box began to unfold. The Underworld and Mount Olympus were both added to the map, and looked absolutely amazing. The battle pass and mythics were also very good. And of course, Midas returned in a stunning event. However, now the problems come in, which is a recurring theme of the Chapter. The defeat of Zues was said through very underwhelming storyline events. The mythics were nerfed and nerfed, and even vaulted at the end. Although a good season, it was plagued. Much, MUCH like our next up.
Chapter 5 Season 3 – Wrecked. This infamous season was the most hated of Chapter 5, causing Fortnite to drop to one of its lowest player counts. Although this season was overhated and pretty fun, I cannot defend it fully. The map changes including the massive desert made the Chapter 5 map even more amazing, but it could not stop the heat. Thanks to the overpowered cars, fights within the community, and nerfs, this season was hated beyond belief. Also, the summer event was AWFUL.
But, in the middle of the season, Epic launched its first new gamemode besides LEGO, Rocket Racing, and Festival from the start of the chapter. That’s right, it’s Fortnite Reload, and the beginning of round two of the metaverse, which we will discuss soon! Reload takes place on a miniature version of the OG map, and it is a mini BR. Its first map, Venture, has new reimagined OG locations, with Tilted Towers, Retail Row, and Pleasant Park being there in its entirety. Reload became immediately beloved, with its rebooting mechanics and OG vibe, and started Fortnite’s rise once again. But, before we get into the really juicy stuff, we need to talk about the absolutely insane run I mentioned at the beginning. And this run begins with…
Chapter 5 Season 4 – ABSOLUTE DOOM. This season hit hard, with the Marvel heroes returning to the island after previously saving the island from Galactus in Chapter 2 Season 4 – Nexus War, one of the most beloved seasons of all time. This season was incredible, with Hope and Jones yet again working with beloved Marvel heroes to take down Doctor Doom. Doom was defeated in a bit of an underwhelming but amazing event, and the true run begins with Fortnitemares. The seasonal event once again came back in its biggest event ever, completely transforming the Chapter 5 map to be all Halloween, and adding films like SAW and The Texas Chainsaw Massacare. This event was absolutely incredible, and everyone was having fun. However, something appeared on the map, something that would change the future of Fortnite. On the screen at Restored Reels, a drawing by Hope appeared on it, powered by one of Tony Stark’s rift beacons. It was a drawing of the Agency.
When the picture of the Agency and the Shark, the beloved locations from Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 2 (widely regarded as the most popular and best season of all time), showed up on the screen, the community went wild. It was October, and it has almost been a year since Fortnite OG. And now, when looking at the screen, it was clear what Fortnite’s next move was. Chapter 2 was about to return.
That’s right everyone. Chapter 2: Remix was about to happen at the end of Chapter 5. In a bit of an underwhelming but still cool transitional event, Chapter 2 Remix began. Chapter 2 made its return in its full glory, much akin to Fortnite: OG the year before. However, there was something very different about the beloved Chapter 2 map. Rappers were here!
Epic, in an EXTREMELY strange and somewhat despised decision, themed Chapter 2: Remix around rappers. Snoop Dogg took over the Agency, Eminem took over the Grotto, Ice Spice took over the Shark, and the late Juice WRLD got his own POI and massive floating silhouette in the sky. This one month adventure back into Chapter 2 was one of the best seasons of all time, and it was VERY fun, although strange considering the rappers. And this season was the second step in the absolutely insane run. As the season kept coming to a close, the huge Juice WRLD in the sky began changing. And, on November 30, Chapter 2 Remix came to an end. With Remix: The Finale, all four rappers began to perform a live concert similar to the beloved Travis Scott event from C2S2. The event ended with a beautiful tribute to Juice WRLD, and we began to enter the next era of Fortnite. And yes, here’s where it goes really, REALLY insane. And, as I promised, let’s get into what I really want to talk about. The Metaverse.
The Metaverse – Round Two:
Right at the end of the Remix: Finale, something happened. Something that I, nor any of the community, were expecting at all. Lore. As you should know, in the last article I talked EXTENSIVELY about this, but Fortnite’s storyline is a bit crazy. However, it all revolves (or revolved) around one thing. The Zero Point. In the final few seconds of the event, as Juice WRLD’s Lucid Dreams faded out, we appeared in a portal, with Hope and Jones, our main storyline characters from Chapter 5, appearing. They traveled with us, as a shard of the Zero Point flew by. And, to close out the event, our character appeared above the brand new Chapter 6 island, as the Zero Point shard crashed into the map. This ignited the beginning of Chapter 6, and the beginning of round two of the Metaverse.
Remember how I said that Reload wasn’t the only new mode, and that I would talk about it later? Well, it’s later, and I wasn’t lying. As I’m sure all of you know, Fortnite OG is back. In early December, it was announced that OG was coming back, but differently than it did in November 2023. Now, it’s the OG OG. Starting from Chapter 1 – Season 1, OG will cycle through every single season of Chapter 1 in shorter season lengths, with new OG passes with remixed skins coming out every season. As of time of writing, we are on Chapter 1 – Season 2, and it has been INCREDIBLE, and extremely well received by the community. Fortnite is setting themselves up for the future with their second attempt at the metaverse, and OG is one of the biggest pieces in this puzzle.
However, OG isn’t the only “new” mode. Out of absolutely nowhere, just a few days after OG was announced, Fortnite Ballistic was announced as well. It is a 5v5 FIRST PERSON shooter, and it is in early access. Although still being improved and changed, Ballistic is an incredible mode, and is another piece of the puzzle in Epic’s new Metaverse.
And, finally, Chapter 6. As of time of writing, we are in Chapter 6 – Season 1, with Season 2 starting very very soon. It is EXCITING. The map is gorgeous, the battle pass is incredible, even Godzilla showed up on the map this season. Everything’s coming up Fortnite, and with an insane amount of modes and effort going into them, Epic has set up Fortnite to never, ever go away.
The Future of Fortnite:
The future of Fortnite, although still a bit unclear, and with some problems to fix, is INCREDIBLY bright. As of time of writing (February 7th, 2025), Fortnite has a total of NINE core modes. LEGO, Rocket Racing, Festival (Round One), Reload, OG, Ballistic (Round Two), Creative/UEFN, Save the World, and of course, Battle Royale. All of these modes are updated regularly, and are incredibly popular. With the community creating thousands of maps in UEFN, and the core modes becoming even better with Epic’s second attempt at the metaverse finally realizing that the people like guns in a gun game, it seems that Tim Sweeny and everyone at Epic has reinvigorated heart and drive to make Fortnite the best it can be.
Just like I said last time, and now being more true than ever, Fortnite seems to be ramping up to be with us for a long, long time.
